Stray cats turned into 'lamb' kebabs
SHANGHAI: Shanghai street vendors are using the meat from stray cats to supplement lamb to make kebabs, an animal welfare organisation said.
The Shanghai Small Animal Association has just completed a one-year investigation in which kebab samples, mostly lamb but sometimes rabbit, tested positively for cat meat.

It's not really any worse than using rabbits or lambs though really. But yeah, that is sad.

I'm not suprised either...I won't be traveling to China, ever.
I think the worst part of this is that the people who are buying this stuff don't know they are eating cats. I seriously doubt most of these consumers would be ok with eating cats or being lied to. I do not believe that cats and dogs are a commonly accepted cuisine in most parts of the world, including Shanghi.
Some people eat cats and dogs in Ghana. A few of my friends did by mistake. The khebabs are often just advertised as meat. Cats and dogs are not seen as pets in the same way we see them. It's mostly by very poor people and a lot of Ghanaians I spoke to wouldn't eat it. One friend told me how he caught his cat to eat. I don't see it as being that different from eating other animals. They also ate bats, grasshoppers, goat, bushrat amongst other things.

Icky!
plenty of people in and around shanghai eat dogs, business as usual. plenty of people south of shanghai include cats as a regular part of their diets. i don't understand why this surprises people so much - although even meat-eatin people in western countries seem to have an especial aversion to eating predatory mammals.

Why? I assume you wouldn't be eating meat kebabs anyhow.

I agree with this completely. Eating cats only seems worse to the general population because they know that cats have feelings, not thinking about all the other animals that are killed and eaten-that have feelings just the same.

But aren't the dog/cat markets right in the street? Maybe that's why (s)he doesn't want to go there. I know if I saw the cages of dogs and cats and saw them abusing and killing them I probably wouldn't be able to stop myself from getting myself arrested trying to stop it.

From a non-veg perspective, perhaps one aspect of the reason for cats not being as acceptable to eat as rabbits/lambs etc. is the fact that they are carnivores.
Carnivores are generally avoided as food items for a few reasons, one being that any toxins that stick around in the body are concentrated up the food chain and most concentrated in carnivores (also filter feeders in the ocean).
That said, I think it's awful!

there are open air markets in many cities in China, but you can avoid them for the most part in the major cities if you wish. in New York City not that long ago you had the same kind of thing, only it was live chickens and live ducks and rabbits. my dad told me how he would go with his grandfather in New York when my grandfather went to look for a duck at the market. i know the cat thing is particularly upsetting because we have them as pets. in many parts of Asia dogs and cats are not viewed as pets in the same manner as in the west. it is a cultural difference. but decrying the use of cats as food as being worse than using cattle or chickens or ducks or lambs is a cultural view not an absolute view. it is all basically the same because it all involves using an animal as food.
