View Full Version : My cat and dog are acting weirdly affectionate ...

All right, I have grown up having cats and dogs, but I have never seen anything quite like the behavior of our dog and one of our cats. Dudley (the dog) gets along pretty well with the cats, although he does like to chase them around sometimes and gets a little protective around his food and toys. But one of our cats in particular, Nople, seems to just be in love with Dudley or something. She especially likes to approach him when he is lying down to clean out his ears.

One of the really weird things is, Dudley will approach Nople (she just stands there and looks at him), and then Dudley stands over her (he's taller than her, so his chest doesn't even really touch her). Nople seems completely fine with this, but if she takes a few steps, a lot of times Dudley will put his paw on her to stop her. There's nothing outwardly aggressive about it; it's all done very calmly and slowly. They also really like to give each other "kisses" (or at least, sniff each others' noses).

It's not a problem, as far as I can see, and I've seen dogs and cats that are friendly with each other before, but nothing quite like this. Our other cat, Gray, does not do this. Any thoughts? Anyone else have weirdly affectionate pets?

I used to have a little spayed female dog who would hump our neutered male cat, but I don't know if that was "love" or instead a dominance thing...or just serious gender confusion....

Ludi - I've seen that too. In the situation I saw at that time, it seemed to be dominance.

I'm just glad there is no humping going on between mine right now ... ;)

When I read the title of the thread I thought that they were..:hump:
It just sounds like they like each other, I thought that you were going to have a situation like on The Osbournes with thier cat and dog

Our first cat was a foundling that was the size of a mouse when we got him. Our dog (a setter-lab mix) kind of adopted him, and once he grew up, he'd lick her ears all the time. It's pretty common behavior for cats and dogs that have grown up together.
