I hope this means, if this slaughterhouse has any sense of sympathy, that they WILL be giving this cow a chance to be given to or sold to someone who will care for it as it should be rather than stuffing it in a pen like that, because Bessie has brass balls in my book to survive that kind of trauma.

I hope they sold it to someone who will give it a good home... but knowing how people are, its probably somebody's hamburger right now.

The cow was taken back to the slaughterhouse, where it was put in a pen with a stronger fence and given food and water.
Oh, how very kind of them. :stinkeye:

This isn't the first story like this, and I hope to hear about more. It would be great to see 'prey' animals stand up and refuse to cooperate with their captures.
May the cows run free once more!

She (Molly B.) has a reprieve for now and several offers of a new home.

"I was totally amazed she was able to swim the river," said Del Morris, the slaughterhouse manager.
yeah becuase all theyre good for is hamburgers and steaks right?
I ranted about this earlier today here (http://ananimalfriendlylife.com/2006/01/bovine-fugitive-becomes-runaway.html).

So now all of these people come out of the woodwork and say they want to buy the cow to keep it from being slaughtered, which is great. However, I wish it didn't take an escaped cow to make people become so defensive, outspoken and up in arms about not letting a cow go to slaughter.
I am glad that this situation ended in the cow's favor though.

Many of you may have read about "Molly B" who escaped from a slaughterhouse in Great Falls Montana.
The good news is the employees from the slaughterhouse have decided that they will not slaughter the cow.
The bad news is that while the farmer who "owns" is willing to selling Molly B to an animal shelter, he now wants more than her $1140 slaughter value.
What a jerk.

That pisses me off. :furious:
If I had a farm I would buy her! I hope the owner will lighten up a little bit and just give her to the sanctuarys for no cost! I guess they only see the animals as a profit, not as a living thing. :(
I'm so happy they decided not to slaughter her. I wish it was the same outcome for all the other animals, though.

You have to remember that the guy still needs to make a living. If he gives the cow away, he loses money. He probably has a family that he needs to take care of....

But he wants more money than he was going to get... meaning that he is just profitting because she made news. Asshole.

What part of "he wants more than her slaughter value" did you miss?

Annikat - while I do not doubt that people need to make a living, that is no excuse for taking advantage of the situation.
More on "Molly B"
I found this in the Great Falls Tribune:
http://www.greatfallstribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060106/NEWS01/601060313/1002
Of note:
-Del Morris, a manager at Mickey's said he sicced his dog on the heifer, hoping to turn the fleeing animal around, but to no avail.
-Reeves said police were authorized to use deadly force on the animal, but only as a last resort.
"Had there been an imminent threat to anybody, we would have shot," Reeves said. "But we understand it was worth a significant amount of money."

I'm glad they are letting it live :D
In the article (the one vegmedic posted above) they mention a lamb who escaped too. I was wondering... do they slaughter lambs? I know sheep meat is called lamb and mutton, but do people actually eat lambs? I know it might be a stupid question, sorry!

I always thought lambchops were lamb. I never knew that sheep meat was called lamb, so I assumed "lamb" was always made of babies. For the first 19 years of my life, I have eaten meat, but would never touch lamb or veal. Even when I ate animals, I found eaten babies to be disturbing. Although all animals are someone's baby.
"Lamb" is made from young sheep, not yet mature.
"Mutton" is adult sheep meat.
