Hi everyone.

We have two happy, healthy cats, but used to have one that died of feline diabetes. I just found out how he really died: the boarding facility that my parents left him with killed him via negligence. They neglected to monitor his blood sugar, and by the time they finally decided to call us, he was in a coma and ended up with so much brain damage he had to be put down.

Here's the kicker. The facility was in a vet's office. If you've got a pet with special needs, do your homework so you won't bring your pet home in a box instead of in a kitty-carrier.

 What a terrible thing to happen to a pet!

Maybe you should sue them. :whip: I'll bet you'd win.

So this kitty had a VET around to take care of him??? How absolutely shocking.

Not surprising though.

Vets are often absolutely clueless. My kitty was very ill, I was worried stiff - the vet then told me he had about 8 weeks to live after he had received the results from the blood tests and x-rays - and wanted to pump him with cortisone and stuff that is given to people with Aids!!! I politely refused and took kitty straight off to the homeopathic vet who also does reiki and energetic work.

My kitty recovered within a few days and has never been healthier. This was about two years ago.

Had I listened to the first vet (who is a well-known vet in my area), my kitty would have died of the drugs he was wanting to poison him with.

The homeopathy and reiki did the trick. The next blood-test and x-rays done showed that he was clear of this so-called ABSOLUTELY mortal and deadly disease that "no cat can ever recover from".

Vets are like doctors. Most of them are just donkeys in white coats.

Vets are like doctors. They're human and they make mistakes. Some of them outright suck and should have their licenses taken away. But I would hate to live in a world without them.

I'm very sorry for your loss, Morna. Have you put in a complaint with your country's veterinary association?

Thank you from a donkey!!! Vets ARE doctors. (I do have a good sense of humor and have not taken these comments personally).

From what you said, it sounds like your vet was negligent. However, I don't have enough details to say for sure. What you need to do is file a complaint with the regualtory agency that issued their license and vet organizations (in the US, contact the AVMA). The AVMA and other organizations want to uphold the good reputation of vets by not letting bad ones practice. There are some bad apples out there, but don't judge the rest by them. I am curious about what your cat had that was "incurable"?

I agree as was posted, Vets do make mistakes. Just as we do I don't think anyone on VB is perfect.I don't think its fair to threaten to sue or report doctor to his board. If this has happen numerous times then I would. But if this is his first time I' m sure he feels bad and why didn't you tell them your cat was a diabetic and maybe what could have been prevented was the cats diet.

I think everyone needs to cut this doctor some slack, instead of accusing the doctor of wrong doings maybe you should question everyone invovled and what other steps could have been done to prevent this.

I am sorry about your loss but.

Thanks for the support everyone. I just wanted to make a public-service announcement. It's too late to do anything legal; my parents didn't tell me what really happened at the time (don't know why), but we got our older cat a few weeks later, and he's almost 7 now. And as I write this, our younger cat (about 8 months old) is curled up in my lap purring.

Thats horrible!!! I'm so sorry that that happened to your kitty. Too bad that that vet didn't know better.

My family had a guinea pig who sadly caught pnemonia (sp?) quite a few years back. We took her to the vet who gave her some kind of shot that was supposed to help her regain health. She had a stroke on the vet table right after the shot. Sadly, regardless of their many years of schooling, vets don't often know what they are doing. :-(

Hmmm... maybe your guinea pig got an incorrect dosage? Or maybe she got the wrong shot? I don't know, hopejoy, but it sounds awful.

Morna, if the vet knew about the cat's condition, than it is negligence that killed her, I'm afraid. Most vets are kind and make sure nothing awful happens to any animal, disabled or not. However, some vets think that as long as you give them food and water, any animal will survive. No. Don't go to that vet again.

I didn't mean to write "most", I meant "many". Sorry!!!! All medical fields are full of both comptetent and UNFORTUNATELY for humans and animals, a good dose of incompetent people. Trouble is, it's hard to tell the difference sometimes. There should be some mark of distinction - a kind of a halo or something so we could know!!!!
