I'm looking for something hubby can put on his tattoos when he gets them that's vegan. Merry Hempsters makes a balm, but it's not supposed to be used in the first few days while the tattoo is healing. I guess it's basically for preserving the tattoo. So, what do you guys use for helping tattoos heal?
from what I've heard, the best thing to put on healing tattoos is just plain lotion.

http://www.scentbyspirit.com/catalog/catalog/product_1084_Natural_Shea_Tattoo_Balm.html shea tattoo balm. i don't see why regular 100% shea butter wouldn't do just as well. as long as you got it really soft first.
Applying moisturizer to the tattoo can ease the itching. You can use any hypoallergenic moisturizer, something like shea butter, or a product specially formulated for tattoos. Those who are looking for an organic product have the option of The Hemp Company’s Tattoo Aftercare.

When I got my last tattoo, the tattoo artist who has been in the business for over 20 years said the best thing to use is lotion. He said Lubriderm or Curel is the best kind with nothing special added into it. With all of my tattoos I just used lotion and they healed up really nice.
Thanks everyone! The artists around here always tell us that A&D ointment is the only thing you should use, but I don't want to buy that.
As I said above, I know about the Merry Hempsters, but that's meant to preserve a tattoo, not heal it. It says on the directions of the tube not to use it on fresh tattoos until they are healed. So, I'll do the lotion thing. :)

My daughter and her hubby just got tattoos, and they were instructed to use lotion on them.

I was instructed to use A and D on my tattoos but I just used lotion and they healed fine. My only advice is when they say don't soak in the tub, etc. until they're healed they mean it! I got the one on my back touched up and then a few days later got invited to a hot tub party...my tattoo looks ok but my colors are nothing like they were

Anything petroleum based isn't too great, because they can leach color from the tattoo. I went with lubriderm, I think, and it worked wonderfully, but you do have to apply it more often than you would with vaseline or something like that.
