View Full Version : Dating Posts by Minutes/Hours/Days/Weeks - Why?
What's with this new thing of having posts labeled as being posted "two minutes ago" instead of just by the date and time? :stinkeye: And also users' last posts are now shown as "two days ago" instead of just showing the date. How are we who are terrible at math supposed to figure out when something was posted, and when somebody last posted?
OK, seriously, not a major crisis, but what's the point?

 When I saw your subject line, I thought it was referring to posts saying "It will be __ days, __ hours, and __ minutes until I see so-and-so again!" Hehe ...
Back on topic ... I think I prefer how they are labeled now. I can never remember what the current date is, and the time didn't show up in my time zone anyway (I don't think), so having the date and time didn't help me out much. Either way is fine with me though - not that important.

I love the new dating system and I was actually getting ready to make a thread saying how much I like it, but you beat me to it. I think it will be especially useful when really really old posts are bumped.

I personally prefer the dates. I'll get used to the minute thing but, I like the time and date better.
I've seen this conversation on a number of V-Bulletin boards.
Some people love it and some people hate it. And some people don't care.
Personally, when I first saw this way of doing things on a V-Bulletin board I used to post on, I created a huge fuss! Telling people that it reminded me of Big Brother .... I find it creepy.
I won't create a fuss here though. Because VB is not my home, it's just a place I visit. So guests normally should not complain when they are visiting - well at least not TOO much.

I prefer the new dating system. I no longer need to figure out what day it is or worry if my time zone is set properly.

Same here.
it's eternally now, anyhow, is it not? or what have you...

I hope it will help people realize when they are resurrecting an ages old thread...

We're just going to try it for a while. I will probably leave it for a week and then have a poll to see which people like better.

I like it too so far - no time zone confusion for me. :)
BTW: Michael is there a poll about keeping post counts and locations under peoples avatars?

I came to this thread with the intention of complaining about the change, but some of you had a good point about the time zone thing.
I just realized the time stamp might not be an either-or deal. Perhaps we could have the "One minute ago" designations on the top of the post, where they are now, and the time/date stamp along the bottom of the post. T'would be nice, and no one could complain they weren't being served. :afro:

I like both. Doesn't matter which one we use to me.

Maybe it can be an option in the User CP?
I like the new date system, it does make it easier. I have a side of me that like too much information, and that side of me likes to see the useless timestamp accurate to the second.
Actually, it would be real easy to make both show, and there is plenty of room for it.

Yeah it does make it really easy for us peeps in other time zones
But if it goes back to the other way, it wouldn't bother me really.

I thought this was about some dating threads and assumed remilard was behind it all.

Now this does drive me crazy when people resurrect a thread from 1969! Like one that I posted in August and got bumped this month!
It did throw me off a little today though, but can go with the flow.
For old threads being bumped up (which can often be completely out of place and SO out of context), I would suggest that threads that are let's say... six months old? a year old? or whatever, get closed.

When I first saw this new dating system, I was startled. But, now I like it. I think that my timezone was a bit messed up. A few minutes.

Harrumph! I got the time zone thing figured out: I reset my time zone option from Pacific to Alaska and set the DST thingy to OFF. Which made the time stamp for each post only a few minutes off instead of more than an hour off. :p

I agree. I noticed that folks have attacked someone for posting to a 2 year old thread. To those who did post to an old thread, it's not old to them and perhaps, just perhaps they have something to add. If the old thread was still open then anyone has the right to post to it. If closed, they can make up a new thread.

The only drawback I see is that the "last visit" stamp by a user's avatar pretty much negates the whole invisibility thing... for instance, if I am online but invisible, it kind of gives away that I'm online when my avatar says "last visit one minute ago". I personally don't really care a whole lot, but some other people might.
Edited to add: I really, really like knowing how old a thread is upfront, however. Thanks for taking a step to help with that one!

Is there a way to make it say both?? :-)
Personally, I prefer time/date... but that's given that there aren't issues with the time zones/ daylight savings time.. which I have noticed there have been..
