Okay, so I figure we ALL must have something that we want to stop consuming. Either slow down the frequency of the consumption, or maybe make the portions smaller, or just stop eating it all together.

I thought I'd create a thread where we can list what we want to change, and post off and on about how we are doing with our goals.

For me:
I feel like recently I've been consuming a load of junk.
Just junk.
candy, chocolate, gum, mints, diet drinks, full-fat cheese, cereal bars, pudding, etc.

Goals:
*Eat less frequently: processed foods, sugar, full-fat items, white/refined/simple grains, foods full of sugar, dessert items (pudding/ice cream/etc)
*Eat smaller portions of: full-fat items, nuts, trail mix, nut butters, caloric liquids, snack foods (chips, crackers, etc)
*Stop eating on a daily basis: candy, gum, and mints.
*Eat more frequently: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein

This is NOT about calories. This is NOT about changing eating habits, eating when full/bored/for emotional or mental reasons, or snacking too much.

This is about the quality of food that we are currently consuming and what we want to eventually be consuming.

You should eat as much of these as you want. They're good for you!

:)

I think that they are good in moderation. Eating a whole bag of trail mix or a whole cup of nuts isn't that healthy (in my opinion).

Can I join if it isn't really a food???

GUM! I chew it obbsessively! It even grosses ME out.

Goals:
make a pack last...um...maybe at least a week? Trust me--I have gone through a pack a day, even though it makes my tummy hurt.

the only thing i want to stop consuming is soda. though i don't thing drinking it once in a while is bad. but i've noticed that after not drinking it for sometime, i find that it tastes too strong. so i'll probably stop drinking it completely. a few years back i quit it for over a year, so i know i can do it.

I'm hoping to cut down my consumption of processed foods which is hard for me since I'm a very, very poor cook even after 14 years of vegetarianism; I'm addicted to Boca and Tofurky products.
For years, I've wanted to decrease the amount of cheese I eat...now that I'm lactose intolerant (who knew that could be adult onset?) that's getting easier!
For the soda drinkers, I managed to dramatically cut down my soda consumption by drinking carbonated water (sometimes with a little fruit juice thrown in to liven up the flavor)...but now I may be addicted to Poland Springs water!

Better than being addicted to pop. Yuck, I have tried that because I love the carbonation. Did that for awhile and never worked for me.

diet coke, too, I guess...

I've tried seltzer water, I really like it. (actually, there is a case in the garage right now. :) ) but nothing beats that sickly-sweet, tinny, chemical taste of diet soda that leaves you rushing for the nearest mammogram and water fountain. :)

Though, today my mom swore off that she was never going to buy the stuff again, as she "spent all ******* night finding these cans around!!!" This'll last about a week or so, then she'll find out how much she misses the stuff, and it will, of course, be on sale.

But, naturally, my mom has perfect self control (she can make a bar of chocolate last a week!) while I can chug a can in 30 seconds.

Yeah, so that's my other thingy to add.

AAH!! So have I!! I thought I was the only one with this habit/addiction.

On a typical day, I have about 30 calories or so worth of sugarfree gum. That's about 12grams worth..which equals to 4 big pieces or 8 small pieces!

On a really really good day, I have just two servings of gum (about 16 calories)...two big pieces or 4 small pieces.

On a really bad bad day, I think I've gone through an entire pack..the kind with 18 servings (28 grams worth..80 calories).

My goal for tomorrow is not to have any gum.
That's my goal.
Let's see if I can do it.

Celery is a good replacement for gum.. you have to chew it quite a bit before swallowing, and it has negative calorie burn

I ate all the celery... :( We're (my mom and me) probably going out to "the fruit stand" today where they sell fruit for so freaken cheap it's scary. I'm gonna get celery there.

So far, no gum!
I had no gum last night *gasp* and no gum this morning *double gasp*.

I can do this!

I also....had a piece of candy this morning (see's candy strawberry buttercream), but that's okay..one thing at a time, right?

dietcoke
12-27-05, 03:27 PM
Yeah!!! You're doing a lot better than me, bluewisdom. I decided that today I was going to chew ONE piece of gum until it lost it's flavor, not just replace it after ten minutes, but then my friend called me and cancled our plans to go ice skating and to the mall, and then I found out that she was at this one girl's house who spread rumours about BOTH of us...

Yeah, so between breakfast and now I've chewed about 7-10 pieces... to actually count would be depressing...

well, I only had a few sips of a diet drink (coke zero... not very tasty) so I'm doing well in THAT category.

And about the candy... look at the OTHER end of things... other people wouldn't stop at one candy, they would have three or four. So you did a good job there, too. :)

 :furious: :whip: :notvegan: :whack: :wall:

I had two pieces of gum.
3grams (16 calories) total.

NO MORE FOR TODAY.
No more.
I figure it's okay, I'm weaning myself off slowly.
Quitting cold turkey would just lead me up to a big gum binge.

Okay...what is detrimental about gum???

ebola

nine less than me...

do you chew sugar gum? Cause I thought sugarfree had, like, three calories per piece...

and why are you counting calories in GUM? That's like counting calories in celery! Your probably gonna burn them off by chewing, and walking to the garbage to throw it away!

I'm finding right now that leaving your gum as far away as possible helps. (I'm downstairs right now and my gum is up in my room) It said in some magazine that that's what dieters should do w/ chocolate, so I decided to see if it would work for me. It does. :)

Good luck for the rest of the day!

Here's an idea. Chew real food.

Get some tofu jerky (can make it yourself). Much better then gum, anyways.

I do chew real food ;).
About 1200 - 2000 calories of it a day.

And...what's so bad about gum?

First of all, I have braces so I'm not even supposed to be having gum at all.

Second of all, I don't like the fact that I seem to be addicted to gum! It would be OKAY if I had it once in a while, but I've had it every single day (and a lot of it each day) since October, I think.

I chew sugarfree gum.
I personally do not count the calories in the gum anymore, I just list it so you guys can figure out how much of it I had (since gum varies by brand).

No gum since my previous post. :D

I also had a craving for a reese's peanut butter cup, but I said "No! No candy."

So....instead I had 1/2 a tbsp of natural peanut butter!
SO much healthier for me and sooo much more satisifying! I feel better about it too, I don't feel guilty and crappy afterwards like I do with candy.

here's another BIG downside from chewing gum... if you chew to much, it hurts your stummach, which (for me) takes away my appitite--and aren't you recovering from an ED?

Yeah... I don't think I'm gonna eat enough today, just because of that...

<-----feels yukky.....

Yeah, I'm in recovery.
Chewing gum doesn't hurt my stomach, just my jaw/head/mouth.
And ohhh how it hurts when you overindulge on the gum.

Maybe you should have a TUM? they help stomachaches.
