ethical gardening/plant keeping

I never thought about this until I started reading on carnivorous plants. A lot of nurseries sell exotic plants that are legally or sometimes illegally taken directly from their natural habitat such that it is environmenally unsound. This is particularly true of exotic plants. I like to grow succulents and want to get some more venus fly traps (let's not debate the ethics of feeding them!) I'm afraid of them being irresponsibly obtained.

I found links to environmentally conscious sellers of carnivorous plants, but have not been able to find anything on this issue for general housplants/shrubs, etc.

Has anyone else researched this issue at all?

I try to grow all my plants from seed, which can be difficult in the case of exotic plants, but it might enlarge the hobby for you and make it even more enjoyable to try to raise your own little plants from seed.

Are you looking for any specific species?

Probably succulents like cactus and such. I hadn't thought of using seeds.

They carry seeds of many rare plants, including several cactus and many succulent species. You need to know a bit about what you're looking for, because the catalog uses Latin, not common names.
