Insanely Easy Sloppy Joes
Category: Main Dishes - Other

Suitable for a: vegan diet

Ingredients:
------------------------------------------------------

1 cup TVP,
reconstitute in 2 cups VERY hot water with 3 Tb. ketchup added

2/3 cup barbeque sauce
1 1/2 cups tomato sauce (1 can)
2 Tbsp. tomato paste

Tabasco or ketchup to taste

OPTIONAL VEGGIES:
(use all or none or whatever you like)

1 green bell pepper, chopped fine
2 stalks celery chopped fine
1 onion chopped fine
1 small carrot shredded

Instructions:
------------------------------------------------------

If you want veggies in your sloppy joes: While TVP is reconstituting, sautee all finely chopped veggies in a small amount of oil in a large skillet, until veggies are soft.

After TVP has reconstituted, add to skillet with BBQ sauce and tomato sauce. (If there is a great deal of liquid left in the TVP, drain some off - there should be maybe a 1/2 cup or so remaining)

Cook over Med.-High until starting to thicken - 5-10 min. or so.

Adjust seasoning to your personal preference with ketchup, tabasco or more BBQ sauce. Serve on toasted buns.

Additional comments:
------------------------------------------------------

This recipe can be finished in 15 minutes or less. Sometimes I can find finely chopped veggies in my supermarket or salad bar, sometimes I leave them out and it's still good.

It's ALSO good with Boca burger crumbles, but considerably more expensive. TVP is cheap.

I feel like an idiot, but...what does TVP stand for??

TVP=Texturized Vegetable Protein

usually made from soy.

If you can't find TVP, Fantastic Foods makes a decent Sloppy Joe Mix.

Mm...I practically live off these things, but I am even lazier and use the pre-made sloppy joe sauce. It might be even tastier if I follow this recipe though *licks lips*

It's dry, you can find it in the bulk food section of a HFS, or Bob's Red Mill makes it. It makes great tacos, too.

I love sloppy joes, perhaps this is dinner tonight at my house...

Is TVP any different from dried soya. As I used to live of TVP in the 90's, but haven't seen it in years. Strangely the last time I had TVP was in West Africa.
