About six months ago, I had some new neighbors move in. They brought along THE most adorable puppy, Benji. At first, Benji was in the house constantly. I would see him outside on his chain when ever there was no one home, but that was it. When he was outside he would play with Khanti. After awhile, Benji was left outside more and more. I would notice that his water bowl was empty, and he had no food dish. I started giving him food and water when ever I fed all of my other animals. Benji would bark all night, every night. I had just started working graveyard shift, so it didn't really bug me. Even though he was right outside my bedroom window barking, I got over it. Unfortunately, my neighbors girlfriend didn't. I was horrified one night when I heard her outside shrieking at the dog and beating it. I could hear the dog whimpering and loud thumps each time she hit it. After a few weeks of this, Benji was exiled to the back of the house where he no longer barks. The woman of the house had a baby, so this means even less attention for poor Benji.

I went out to check on him a couple of days ago. He is soooo skinny! I brought him a can of beef stew and he drug himself over to it. He can barely walk!!! He fell a couple of times trying to make it over to the stew. I've been feeding him canned cat food and dry dog food mixed the past few days and I have been filling up what I think is his water dish. They have an old hard hat outside in the back yard that there was some muddy water in. His spirit is so broken he doesn't even play with his doggie friends anymore. When I went back there this morning to feed him I brought Khanti with me. Khanti hopped around Benji trying to get him to play and he just laid there staring out into space. I'm going to buy a few more cans of beef stew and see if he warms up a little to me. I would take him but I have 4 dogs, 10 cats, and this guy lives right next door to me. I think he might notice his dog in my house. I'm not sure if he is going to let me pick him up, either. It may take awhile to get him to trust someone after being abused like this. If I can get him out of there in the next few weeks, I will be sure to post his petfinder.com profile incase anyone is interested. This dog desperately needs a new home!

Oh my. Poor Benji. Call the cops. There are laws against this kind of neglect/abuse.

I've done that with another dog. I called the animal control division of the police department and no one ever showed up. I kept calling and calling, and they just kept telling me they would send someone out. Liars! I ended up stealing that dog, too.

Have you asked the guy if you can look after Benji? He obviously should not have a dog, maybe he would be happy to get rid of Benji?
Poor dog.

Are the police allowed to ignore calls like that?

My husband said he will talk to the owner when he gets home. He works for an oil company and stays gone for long periods of time. Not the ideal pet person. I only see one flaw in that situation. If he says that he wants to keep the dog, then I will have a huge problem if he doesn't start taking better care of Benji. He'll know that I'm the one who took the dog. I don't really care except for the fact that my dogs sleep outside while I'm at work. I'll continue putting food and water out for him until my husband talks with the owner and we decide what we are going to do.

I don't really know if they are or not. I've had a horrible time getting them out here for various different situations involving animals. There was a woman who had a front yard full of starving/dying dogs that had mange and other various diseases and they wouldn't come check it out until I had 5 different people calling every day. I had to send them pictures and ended up threatening to get PETA involved. Luckily they had heard of PETA and PETA was actually willing to help. The dogs were also very aggressive and the woman kept allowing them to reproduce! It was a horrible, disgusting situation. Most of the dogs looked and smelled like they were rotting alive. I think most of the dogs ended up having to get euthanized.

I would stretch the truth a bit. Have you DH tell the guy what has been noticed and that people are talking. Offer to take the dog or simply tell him that what he is doing will be reported.

This is not acceptable. The first time you checked on him would have been a good time to call. He had no food and no water. That is definitely animal abuse. Is there NOBODY else you can call? What about the local Humane Society or ASPCA chapter?

You should also call the police about this dog, anyway. Keep calling and calling if they don't come. Tell them this is an obvious case of animal abuse and something needs to be done right away or the dog will die.

Poor Benji.

Call the media too if the police dont help. It is against the law.

Call the police and the local SPCA or similar organization. Honestly I don't think I could have sat by listening to them beating Benji. These monsters deserve to be in jail, though I know the laws probably won't support that.

All I'm going to say is... You need to take action NOW. Don't wait until Benji is dead.

OK, this is going to sound harsh but how come something wasn't done when this dog was getting beaten?? This went on for a few weeks??? WTF?????

Good god, something has to be done NOW!! This dog is dying. Find some friends, find a local humane society, find someone to steal that dog.

PLEASE - I am sorry but I don't understand how someone could live next door to someone and know that for weeks they are beating their dog and nothing was done.

AND yes, I did see my neighbour beat his dog ONCE and something was done about it - let's just say that that guy is not going to beat that dog ever again!!!

The police usually won't do anything about animal cruelty. I don't know your location, but alot of times the animal control officers in certain districts really don't care either. I think you should just take the dog to a rescue group. If you ask the guy he may say no and then you won't be able to do anything. And you do have to worry that he'll then hurt your dogs if he thinks you've called up on him. It's just so sad, I know how you feel.:furious:

Don't CONSIDER dognapping, DO IT NOW. That dog needs help fast and will likely die before you get him to warm up to you. If he is getting some food from you and still can't walk there maybe worse problems than starvation and neglect going on.

I think you should start planning your dognapping operation NOW.
No food,no water,repeatedly hitting a dog...that makes me sick.

I thought discussing illegal activities (like stealing dogs) was against the TOS . . . not to mention stupid.

ETA: with intent to perform said activities, that is.

stupid as in do it but don't say anything or stupid as in don't do it??

I am still mad that a person could hear a dog being beaten for weeks and did nothing. That poor dog - such 'caring' neighbours.

That is very very sad and horribly cruel.

I know someone who works for the SPCA, and she told me that if you phone in and report an animal who does not have food, water, and (I believe) adequate shelter, they are required to follow up.

I don't know if you have an SPCA near you, but if you do, CALL THEM. Say you know that the dog does not have water or food, and tell them about how you heard it being beat.

If you don't have an SPCA near you, then I don't know. It's a very hard situation, and I am sorry you have to deal with this and I am even more sorry that the poor dog is having to endure such cruel treatment. It makes me sick thinking about it.

Anyways, I think you should do what you need to do to ensure that this cruelty stops, and that the dog is given proper care. My thoughts are with you and the dog.....he is lucky to have a neighbor like you who cares enough to make sure something is done.

Calling in the south is often a big waste of time, I called about my neighbors putting their cat outside instead of taking it to the vet when it has weird growths on its ears and they came, couldn't find the cat because it was outdoors and never came back. Animal control is a joke around here, and apparently a joke around fruitarian girls area too.

I am sorry but I should have thank you sooner G sooo...

Thanks G - are you a Capricorn? (I am a sexy goat)

Beloved - I am truly lucky here. Animal Control is good and also I volunteer at our local humane society (in our small community) so I have good resources plus being active in a/r, I have networked in the larger area and so have many friends who have friends, etc. I know though that it must suck when that is not the case. That being said, this does not mean that someone must rely soley on Animal Control, etc. In the larger city here where the shelters are run by the SPCA, lots of people have taken certain circumstances into their own hands and 'done' something about it. Unfortunately in this case, this person has to take circumstances in her/his hands.
