On this date six months ago, I adopted my dog Bosco, a 2-3 year old chocolate lab/chesapeake bay retriever mix.

A woman who lives up in the Seattle area (not me) was vacationing down in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and came across this very friendly, but sickly looking dog. He was severely underweight (about 40-45 pounds), and showed some signs of abuse and neglect...she felt very sorry for this poor dog and knew that if she left him there he would probably die (animal rescue in Mexico is nothing like it is here..) after she found a veterinarian to give him the care he needed, she brought him back to the states to adopt him out. She already had five dogs of her own, and it's illegal to have more than that in the city, but she knew he would have a better chance at a happy life in America.

This kind woman had put up ads on the internet while she was still in Mexico, and someone had replied and showed much interest in adopting him. He flew 12 hours to get here, only to find out that the family that was interested didn't want him because he didn't become immediate best friends with their dog. The next person that attempted to adopt him had taken him hunting (something you don't do with a full grown dog who's never been around guns) and the gunshots scared the crap out of him. He brought him back to the woman who rescued him from Mexico. After that, another man had adopted him without the consent of his wife, only to bring him back a day later because his wife was scared of big dogs. Right when she had pretty much given up hope on finding him a forever home, I had come across the ad and knew immediately that he was the dog for me (he looks like my dog melrose who had passed on not all that long ago.)

We've been pals ever since :)

Now he's a happy spoiled dog, and weighs about 90 pounds...a healthy weight for his bone structure. Gets on my nerves sometimes, but I love him.

This is what he looked like a couple of weeks before I adopted him..

I do... it was hard for her to part with him because he's such a cuddle bug, but she couldn't keep him because of the law. :(

Which is why a lot of rescue groups are so picky about who they adopt out animals to. My group insists on home visits before we even consider adopting out an animal. You'd be surprised at how many people get mad at that or upset because they want the animal "TODAY". We figure if they can't be patient enough to wait a few days and go through the process then they can't be patient enough to have a furry companion.

angelene17, congrats! He's a cutey-pie!
