View Full Version : Lack of appetite and weight loss. When to start worrying.
Two weeks ago, I started on some meds. The main side effect I've been suffering is complete loss of appetite. I used to munch all day long. Now, eating twice in a 24 hour period is a 'good' day. Meals tend to be along the lines of toast w/pb, soup, or cereal w/ soymilk. These days I have to force myself to have some food, as its really no longer appealing. As a result I've lost about 6lbs in 2 weeks. I can't say I mind losing weight, but as someone who's already thin, I really shouldn't. I have a follow up doctor's appointment at the end of the month, but am not sure at what point my lack of appetite and weight loss truly become a concern. I feel fine otherwise.

I would call your physician and let him/her know about your concerns.
Yeah, but thats a pain in the butt cause their office hours are the same as mine and I don't have a private workspace.

Wow, what meds are these? I need to get me some!
Sorry, I know this is a real concern for you. Hmm, you don't necessarily have to call YOUR doctor... try calling any office that happens to be open at a time that's convenient for you. Many clinics have doctors that are on call specifically to return phone calls and answer questions of patients (their own or not). At least that might help ease your concern until you can see your regular physician.
Could you maybe call on your lunch break or something? It probably won't take more than a minute or two to talk to the doctor/nurse.
Yeah, I could call on my lunch break if I wander outside. I'm just so tired of doctors!

When I started on a new med, the same thing happened to me. Now after being on it for awhile, my appetite is coming back. Darn.

Agree. It often takes about 2-4 weeks for side effects to settle down. If they continue, it might be worth trying a different drug. Often its trial and error, until you get one that suits. katie

Same type of thing happened to me. GET OFF THE MEDS NOW! Visit your local health food store and get vitamins that do the same thing without killing you. If you don't things will get worse...
6lbs in two weeks is dangerous, speak to someone about it as a matter of urgency. I have no idea what the drugs are for or what your suffering from, so i'm not gona say stop taking to drugs, but a decant vitamin programmed taylored to your needs and a good diet cures alot of things. Perhaps that's something you could do some research on, to see if it's a viable alternative.

Please talk to your doctor! That doesn't sound good. :-/
My appetite is fairly normal, now. Not to the point it was before, but I get hungry three times or more a day like a regular person. After I lost the 6lbs, I stopped losing and have stayed the reduced weight. The meds are something that doctors have been trying to get me to take for years for a chronic problem. I finally gave in and now that the adjustment period is over, I feel a lot better. Unfortunately, this is not an issue that can be corrected with vitamins. If so, I wouldn't have gone on the meds to begin with! I hate taking any sort of drug and have already exhausted 'natural' options of making myself feel better. I actually have my follow up visit tomorrow. At that time, the doctor will check out my stats and let me know his opinion on things. ... and for the record, it would be dangerous for me to suddenly stop taking the pills, so thats not going to happen. I'd have to taper off.
Thanks for the comments.
