View Full Version : Armadillo rampage!

This is really just complaining about the little guys, who have been especially determined lately to get into my garden beds, which are improving very quickly with beautiful soft, fluffy, organic soil. Which armadillos love to dig in!

They are just adorable animals, but they make me angry! They are so strong, and stubborn. I just have to reinforce my fences and eliminate any small holes in the wire that they can force their way through.

<---Never saw an armadillo in CT. We do have an over abundance of black squirrels though.

Here's one of our locals contemplating a rampage:

Is that outside your home? They are so interesting looking I'll admit.

She apparently lives under our workshop.

Maybe you should make a little play area for armadilloes outside of your garden, so they won't be so tempted?

I always found it interesting that one American sees things as common and another American never sees at all.

What other critters do you have where you live?

wow there is such a thing as a living armadillo? I thought it was a mythical creature I've only seen dead ones on the highway. My goal is to one day see a live one. They are such neat looking critters.....I'm sorry what was your ?

Axis deer
Coyotes
Racoons
Wild boar
Porcupines
Jackrabbits
Cottontail rabbits
Rock squirrels
Fox squirrels
Red fox
Grey fox
Beaver (very rare)
Ringtail
Skunk
Various mice
Voles
Bats

that's all I can think of right now....

OK..I have seen a porcupine..in Maine..I think it was Maine. I dont believe I've seen a wild boar 'cept on LOST..but that doesnt count does it? I know we have coyotes but I havent seen one as of yet and we do have oodles of deer, raccoons.

The wild boars scare me. I've never seen a live one, just ones hit on the road. They are huge.

My husband saw a live porcupine at the entrance to our driveway, but I've only seen dead ones.

I haven't seen a live coyote but we hear them frequently.

Don't forget javelinas! I'm never sure if they're just a wild pig, or a different species. The few I've seen are fairly small and unthreatening, and they run away when they encounter humans.

And don't forget the abundance of snakes. Texas is rich in snakes. Oh, sorry, you were just doing mammals.

Gators, horned frogs...

Texas has a lot of cool things. We rock!

Javelinas are very fiery and dangerous. I have seen a few and they are very aggressive. They are smaller than most of the wild boars I have seen including Russian, but they are proof that it is the fire within that rules. I believe they are responsible for many deaths in lower Mexico, Guatamala, and other countries in that general vacinity.

My advice is if you see one, stay out of its' way.

I forgot possums!

I've only ever seen a javalina once, many years ago. They tend to live a little more to the south, I think.

Wow the animals in my area (squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, and Deer) just seem so plain in comparison. I have seen an irate possum in my area. Large city rats are a sight (I have not seen any large suburban rats).

We've got possums, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, mice, rats, and a flock of parrots in this suburb of Los Angeles.

I've seen suburban rats, but I'm not sure they're larger than average. They look like pet rats, but with wilder brown fur.

We had feral parrots in Burbank - where do you live?

We have them here as well in CT. Actually I think they are some sort of Parakeet? From what I understand they either escaped or were let go and somehow they adjusted to the weather here. In a park near by, they have these HUGE nests. They are getting picked off though by a resident hawk.

I'm in the South Bay (Torrance/Redondo Beach), Ludi. I looked just now, and found an article (http://www.coolcaliforniastuff.com/wild-parrots-of-irena-street.html) that says we have thousands of now-wild parrots in SoCal - who knew?!

Oh, and up the road a bit, in Palos Verdes, they have a problematic peacock population.

Sorry to hear about your armadillos. (But they are adorable!)

The only wild animals I've seen in Santa Monica are squirrels.

Sound like the kind they have in Chicago.

Just looked up the name. Argentinean monk parakeets. They are big in Brooklyn too. Check out this link. http://www.brooklynparrots.com/
