An aquaintance of mine has offered to teach me to downhill ski, and I'm pretty excited about it. I went skiing once seven years ago with no training, and it was really rough. I have never been so sore for so long as I was after that day. I'm not in bad shape now, but I doubt I'm quite as in shape as I ought to be if I want to get the best of out my skiing experiences. Can anyone offer recommendations on how I can train in or outside of the gym to prepare?

I run and horseback ride in the off season. I would say anything that is working your legs, even if it's just doing weights. When I was lifting weights I would do the leg press, leg curl... and I think it's called the hip abductor?? Whatever you find fun! Good luck and remember to stay safe.

I don't do anything to prepare for ski season. I usually just go just four times a season anyhow.

The first time, I get ready for my legs to burn for a day or two afterwards, and then it just gets easier. If you've got good technique, your legs don't burn that much with a little rest and hydration.

My biggest problem is that my knees burn badly if I don't parallel really well.

This is what I would say too - only I only go about once or twice a season - I am truely the most out-of-shape person in the world and I still manage to do pretty well - a few sore muscles but nothing too bad.

Just take it easy your first time out. Take it VERY easy... you'll start to "feel" when you've had enough.

Stretch a lot. A decent stretching routine will help with the soreness. It's like any physical exercise, the more you do it the less it hurts..... in time. :-)

In the gym, do the leg extension and hamstring machines, low weight/high rep (say 3-5 sets of 50) Do that say, twice a week.

Out of the gym. With your back to the walk, sorta bend your knees and scoot down until your thighs are parallel to the floor, like you are sitting with your back to the wall but there is no chair under you. Do that as long as you can, every other day.

Are you going skiing at Tahoe? Heavenely offers skiing lessons. I would see if you like snow boarding first. Its a great sport.Good work out too. We live in Sacramento about 2 hours from South Tahoe. Cycling is great for snowboarding.
You really need to be in shape if your going to try either sport.( especiallly your legs) You could really hurt your self if you do not know what your doing. A friend of ours got hurt hella bad last year and he knew what he was doing.Be:bow: Careful
