i work in a supermarket and have been looking at the ingredients in things, i know not to eat products with gelatine in and also cheese with rennet. are there any other things which will be on a list of ingredient that i cant eat i saw something of a product which said gelling agent and then in brackets had another word which i hadnet heard of so i dont know if it was from an animal, i am vegetarian for the animals sake, so any help would be apricated, also are there products which i wouldnt expect to have animal in but actually do? i live in england if this helps, i know that some buiskits are not vegetrain, and help would be greatly apriciated!! thanks :sunny:

There are multiple lists online with the names of various things to watch out for. I used to have a lot on mind when I first switched!

Just Google it up. Something like... " List of animal derived ingredients " or something. I may be wrong, but Petas site may have lists on it too.

If you're stumped about weather something is vegan or not, just google for the ingredient and the word vegan with it and see what comes back (i.e. "gelatin vegan" without quotes).

Or, you could post the ingredient here so people could tell you if it's vegan or not (but google it first).

Here's (http://www.vegansociety.com/html/food/criteria.php) a list of E numbers and ingredient names that are/aren't vegan. There's loads of other lists round, but this is one of the few I have in my bookmarks that list E-numbers, too.

In UK, iirc, there's also the Vegan Society stamp that you could look for (not sure if that's for all products, some products or what). As I understand it, that stamp makes things quite easy because people can spot suitable things at a glance. US has no such stamp so we get to memorise and read all those fun, long-a$$$ words... lucky us.

Anyway, hope that helps. :)

I'm very critical of some of the things PETA does and some of the work they do, but this site is my Food Bible/Qur'an/Veda, whatever floats your boat.

Some people don't like the way PETA handles things. Personally, I applaud them for doing anything at all. Where most sit, they Riot, and where animals suffer, they try their best to help.

Sometimes they do so violently, and some people don't agree with it. There may be other reasons, but I can't think of any other than some lies and rumors that have spread about them.

I agree with their ideas, and their videos are most of the time top notch, but when they start to act violently, they hurt the whole movement by making us seem violent extremists. While we all need to do what we can to help out those without voices, we shouldn't do it in a way that negatively biasses those who might otherwise have considered veg*nism.

Can you provide links or referrences to violent behavior by PETA? I would be interested in reading them.

I should clarify, that comes out as ignorant, you're right.

Not violent in the sense that they kill people, but stupid things like hucking paint on people. If people are dumb enough to wear fur, having paint thrown on them isn't going to make them any smarter. They're going to go out and kill another hundred animals to replace it.

This is kind of cool. I've been lacto-vegetarian my whole life and want to go vegan. This site tells you things you can use to sub the eggs and dairy while you are baking.

Here's PETA's list called Caring consumer

http://www.caringconsumer.com/ingredientslist.asp

It's really long. I remember printing this out once. It's like 23 pages. Hard to lug it to the grocery store with you.
