i know you're not looking for high sugar recipes..why not try adding a teaspoon of molasses to it? molasses has calcium and iron, which makes it HEALTHY...
try these:
start with plain oatmeal and add soymilk.. then add
-dried fruit: raisins, chopped dates, chopped figs, some walnuts, a dash of sugar and 1/4 tsp of vanilla (vanilla extract, IMO makes it taste BETTER)
-Hot fresh fruit: roughly chop an apple, toss it into a skillet with a little liquid of your choice (a little melted EB, water, apple juice), saute until the apples are soft, add cinnamon to taste and mix into your oatmeal w/some nuts..
bananas are good this way too, cept i recommend spraying your pan with nonstick and using a nonstick pan.. sautee the bananas and add vanilla to the bananas, then mix them into your oatmeal with some fresh cold blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, or strawberries... you can also heat up the banana until it's kinda caramelized and then mix it into the oatmeal with some cinnamon and walnuts.. it's YUMMY.
a healthier alternative to sugar is blackstrap molasses, as it provides sweetness, iron and calcium.. it has a sortof strong flavor, but if you like gingerbread, you can use a small bit of that along with the same spices you would use to make gingerbread to make gingerbread oatmeal..
this is one of my favorite recipes for oatmeal from recipezaar... it's good w/o the honey!
3/4 cup large flake oatmeal
1/8 teaspoon turmeric (original recipe called for 1/4 tsp....you decide)
1/8 teaspoon salt (1/4 tsp. in original)
1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice (original recipe called for ground cloves)
1 pinch nutmeg
1 teaspoon honey (I omit, but my daughter adds 1 package of Equal after cooking for sweetness)
1 1/2 cups milk
Optional
sometimes i add finely diced dried fruit, like apricots (optional) or cranberries (optional) or raisins (optional) or sometimes i add toasted chopped walnuts (optional) or almonds, after cooking depending on my mood and what is on hand (optional)
2-3 servings Change size or US/metric

I change up my oatmeal addictions periodically
Currently, its NOT quick oatmeal (the 5 min in microwave kind) made with rice milk or soy milk with 1/2 finely diced apple and a handful of toasted chopped (well, broken up with my fingers) pecans and cinnamon and maple syrup.

Yum!
What I like is a big thing of oatmeal (made with water), lots of fruit on top (Chopped banana or STRAWBERRIES), and then put ground cinnamon and cloves!
I just ate that...and
Im hungry again. lol.

This is what I just ate this morning:
1/3 cup oatmeal
water
1 single serving box of yellow raisens
single serving cup of unsweetened applesauce
1 packet of Stevia (calorie-free natural sweetener)
cinnamin
Tastes soooo yummy! You may not even want to add the Stevia, I bet it would be sweet enough without it. I love this combo
Oatmeal doesn't have to be served with sweetners; try cooking it as you would other grains, like rice or barley. Especially if you use the steel-cut oats (instead of rolled oats). Put cooked oats into soup, or make "oat pilaf" by seasoning with vegetable broth, chopped onions & veggies, etc. Put oats into nutloaf, or veggie burgers:

Myself, I like a steaming bowl of hot oatmeal, with salt and a big dab of Earth Balance margarine. :lick:
My favorite way to have oatmeal is slicing up a banana in it and cooking it. Another good way is to add chopped apples and cinnamon. You can add sweetener if you want to as well :)
Also, in muffins, I usually substitute oatmeal for half the flour. It works pretty well. Just put it in a blender or food processor first :)
And I always use real oatmeal, not instant oatmeal. Better texture.

I like peanut butter and that 100% fruit spread stuff and sometimes Craisins in mine. I also add ground up flax seeds. My friends are kind of weirded out by it, but it's really good!

hehehe...
i like making waffles with oatmeal as half the flour.. they have GREAT texture...
i also like making the non-instant kind of oatmeal cold... mixed with just enough soymilk to make it kinda pasty....
there's a place in town that makes "gooballs" out of oatmeal, nuts, raisins, peanut butter, chocolate chips, maple syrup, coconut, granola.. and they're like.. YUM
and they sit like a rock in your tummy.. but they're SO GOOD!

thank you so mutch, all these recipes sound delishus.
i like to stir in a TBSP or two of peanut butter, and a dribble of blackstrap molasses or a handful of dried fruit for sweetness, then splash milk or soymilk on it. this fills me up for HOURS. sometimes i add ground flaxseed or wheat bran as well.
