Hi, I was wondering if wine and beer are veg*n? I live in Canada and drink things like Molson Canadian and Zinfandel Wines.

Thanks so much!

I believe beer definitely is...it's made from water, hops, etc. Wine--there is some controversey that certain wines use a food coloring that is not vegan. I am relatively new to veganism, so i'll be interested in hearing what others have to say...it would be hard for me to give up my beer!

i am totally against intoxication
but since the question was raised and an answer can be given to let someone remain within the vegan parameters, this may be of assistance

There used to be a site called 'vegan beer.com' or something like that, but I can't find it anymore.

Google is your best friend in cases like this.

Wine & beer can be vegan but not necesarilly. Some brewers & vintners use isinglass & other animal products as finings to clear the wine / beer. these can leave traces. Also some manufacturers use char bone filtered sugar (no Australian sugar is processed this way fyi)
Do a search for vegan beers. All 'Coopers' beers are fully vegan & the pale ale is a beaut...

Since I am totally FOR intoxication ;) I will add my 2 cents.

Beer is vegan in theory at least. The thing is that beer makers are not required to list ingredients and they have a list of over 100 allowable ingredients that COULD be in your beer. I confirmed this fact by finding this article:

http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/files/food/beer_challenge/additives.html

Your guess is as good as mine as to what exactly is on this list, but the chances of everything being vegan and/or natural are pretty slim in my opinion.

The one exception to this is beer which adheres to the "Bavarian Purity Law," which means that the only ingredients allowed are: water, malt, yeast, and hops. I know that Okanogan Spring makes some decent beers under this law.

Mmmmm..... beer....

This is one of those instances where I don't really give much weight to it. I'll drink anything. Absolutely anything. Except absinthe. Lord knows I'm not having that again! But I don't give worry to finings.

Thanks everyone, I am going to check out those links. I e-mailed Molson Canadian to see if any of there products are Vegan. I can't see me giving up my beer and wine so I am hoping for a good responce.

This is very true. You can do a lot of searches and usually find which beers/wines are vegan and which arent.

It really is truely a "trace' amount. It bothers some people more than others.

I personally don't worry about it. There is less animal product used in a 100 gallon cask of wine than there is a 5 lb. bag of (bone-char-processed) white sugar...

If you're going to get down to trace-miniscule amounts look at it this way - I'd be impacting animals more drinking a Coke (because of the sugar used to make it), than a glass of wine...

But read up on it and decide - lots of websites mentioned above and lots more out there... decide what's best for you. I totally respect the choices and standards others have, this is just what works for me.

Me - I'd rather have the wine, thanks.

Intoxication can be very, very fun.:p But I am picky on my drinks.

Nastor. I won't give up beer or wine, that is just not an option. What about Trader Joe's line, i wonder if that's vegan.

glassgal; Trader Joe's wines and beers are not vegan, they have very few actual "Trader Joe" brand items that are, unfortunately. But beer and wine aren't items I'm giving up either.

Guiness (spelling?) isn't vegetarian/ vegan. The only reason I know this is because I found it on the Vegan Society website... lol...

Your best bet is to purchase beer/wine which says 'suitable for vegetarians' on the label, or ask at your local pub...

I don't drink, so i can't really help anymore :)

Well, we're actually not speaking of sugar, this is a thread about beer and wine. Start a new thread and maybe your question won't be ignored.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES - ARE THEY VEGETARIAN?

It will come as a surprise to most people that many alcoholic beverages contain, or are produced using, animal products. For example, many wines (and beers) are clarified or "fined" by adding isinglass, a pure form of gelatine obtained from the bladders of fish. Isinglass assists in the coagulation of the non-liquid grape particles and impurities in the wine, making them easier to extract and leaving the final product clear and "clean". Wine and beer makers may also use other animal products for fining/clarifying such as egg albumen, modified casein (from milk), and chitin (from the shells of crustaceans). The fining agents are removed from the wine/beer via filtration during the production process but no guarantee is made by manufacturers that there is no residue in the final product, and many vegetarians and vegans are opposed to the use of animal products in the production process in any case.

I saw sugar mentioned a few times in this thread so that is why I said "speaking of sugar" in my post. It was a passing thought not even worthy of a whole new thread.

Oh crapola!! That list is terrible news! I never really thought about beer & wine not being vegetarian- now it turns out Boags & Cascade beers, Mercury Cider, Jacob's Creek wines etc. are all not good for vegetarians!!! Arrgghhh!!
