View Full Version : Large Tote/Shopping Bags?

With all of the plastic and paper bags available at the grocery stores, I realized that I'd like to do something nice for the environment.
Does anyone know of a place online or even brick and mortar where I could purchase a large shopping bag style tote bag? I'd like it to be really large and with handles. I want to have it so that I'll never have to have my groceries bagged in paper or plastic again, and I can reuse/wash this one over and over again.
I'll probably purchase more than one if I can find what I'm looking for. I hate having all of these plastic bags sitting here. We use them in our bathroom and upstairs trash for right now, but hate that they are going to go to a dump somewhere and harm the environment.
Thanks to anyone who can help. Just wanting to do my little part to help our environment.

All my canvas bags are from grocery stores. My largest, which seems too big when it's packed with heavy stuff, is from Trader Joes.

you'll definetly need more than one :)
I've seen quite a few canvas tote bags at Savers, but the size might not satisfy you ... heh even though the price will.
and here are some from ebay

All of my bags are from grocery stores too. Whole Foods sells them around here. Mine are actually around 15 years old, purchased from Albertson's supermarket and a garage sale. Even with regular use and occasional washing, I expect them to last another 5 or 10 years.

Does LL Bean still make one? I remember that they had a good one...

I bought mine at a local store called "The Fresh Market" ... but I've seen them online at petacatalog.org.
Here's one (http://www.petacatalog.org/prodinfo.asp?number=TB110&variation=&aitem=19&mitem=33)
Or try www.reusablebags.com.
I've found that the larger tote bags with longer straps (to put over my shoulder) are better than bags with short handles.

I think Michael set up an account with Cafe Press whereby you could order various products that had a VeggieBoards logo printed on them. I believe one of these products was a tote bag. Part of the proceeds of the sale would go to support this Board.
I couldn't find the link just now, but I'm sure someone will come up with it.

I also think this is cool:
ecobags.com shopping system (http://www.ecobags.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.5/.f) includes mesh bags and produce bags.

I'm not sure where you live, but if you are anywhere near a "Sobeys" grocery store (mostly in Atlantic Canada, but also scattered through the rest of Canada as well), they sell very large, high quality canvas bags for $2.99 each. I have two of them and use them for everything from bagging groceries to carrying books. They do tend to shrink in the dryer though, so I just hang them to dry.
Also, "Superstore" grocery stores sell plastic bins with handles on them that are quite handy for both grocery shopping and for carrying the groceries home in. I'm not sure how much they are, but I don't think they are very much.

Thank you very much everyone! I've looked at a ton of different bags, and so far I like the one made by Peta the best.
We live out in the middle of nowhere, and are an hour away from the closest health food store. And that's a small one. My sister and her husband live close to a Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, which is about 2 hours from here, so once we get all moved and settled in, I need to go down and do some shopping there as well.
Thanks again everyone!

I bought the canvas style bags at whole foods and they are HUGE! I didn't relize how huge until I started stuffing groceries in them and they are really roomy. I'm happy with them. I throw them in the wash too- and keep in back of my jeep to use at ANY store. I can't recall the price, but low- maybe $1.99? I'm in Canada.
