I'm just starting to exercise outside of walking. I'm going to do push-ups and do curls with heavy jars for arm strength, I'm going to do sit-ups to flatten my stomach, and I'm going to start running.
I'm mostly concerned with, well, my butt. I'm looking to tone it up (but not shrink it!) and prevent cellulite from forming as long as possible. Will running take care of that? I have read that running uphill will work the glutes especially. I'd like to do squats, but my friend suggested that they hurt one's knees, and it does sort of hurt my knees. Would I get the same effect if I just stood in the squat position for an increasing longer period of time each time I exercise? I just remember doing that in gym class, although I haven't seen it suggested on the websites I'm looked at. Is it possible I'm doing squats incorrectly?

Squats have always hurt my knees. Yes, because if you hold it, it still envolves your quads. Use some weights. Running was a great way that I got thin and rid of cellulite for the most part. Some, it just stays. lol. Running up-hill on my treadmill is a great work-out, but darn can be hard.
I used to run all the time and lost a lot of weight. Now, I do not. I really need to get back to the work out thing to shed some pounds.

Make sure your knees do not go past your toes in a squat. It's a position like you're about to sit in a chair, and you should have most of your weight in your heels to where you can almost lift your toes off the floor. That may help the knee pain.

Running uphill is what hurts my knees. Everyone is different I guess. I can do squats and lunges without knee pain. Perhaps you are not not doing squats correctly. Hiking uphill is great for the buns. But I swear that it is yoga that has given me my "cute butt" (these are my bf words btw). I have been doing yoga for 7 years so I'm doing the intermediate level stuff, not sure if the beginner level does much for the buns. Not that one would do yoga just for the buns, it's just a nice benefit.

Do you mean when you place your back against the wall and kinda "sit" there for a few minute? I used to do that in gym class too and I heard somewhere that it's actually not very good for you. I'm not sure if it's true though. It's possible that you just aren't doing squats correctly. Take a look at this site; I found this website really helpful when I started doing squats. http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/displayarticle.php?aid=52

I was thinking of asking my grandparents to buy me a really good treadmill for Christmas, either that or an elliptical.
Are you glad you have one?

Sorry, I just saw this post. Yes I am!!! I took off 30 pounds after my son on a treadmill watching the food network. It is my baby. I wore out that first one, and then bought a nicer one. Go for the nicer one, will last longer. My nordatrac is the bomb.
When I used to work out at the gym, the elliptical was so hard for me. A great workout though. I could run on the treadmill for 45 minutes, but could not stand 10 minutes on the elliptical.
Now, I will admit that I have gained weight, from not using my treadmill lately though. My husband put up a tv on the wall for me to watch when I run. I really need to get back too it. I do dust my treamill every week though.lol. For real. I hate dust on it. lol

if squats are hurting your knees, then you're using improper form. i suggest getting someone to teach you how to do it. i would teach you how to do it if you lived near me.
i have an unusual squat form because i have very long femurs. my depth isn't as great either, because of those long femurs. but, i really shine with dead lifts--excellent form because of my long femurs.
but stairs and that sort of thing is also good for glutes.
