16 mile run this morning. It was cold, it was wet, it was very unpleasant...but I did it. I forgot how cramped my muscles get in this cold damp weather...I was very achy.

Sunday: 8 mile run
Monday: rest
Tuesday: 7 mile run
Wednesday: 6 mile run

I'm trying to ease my dog into running (doesn't go the full distance with me, yet!) ... I'm taking her a mile or so every other day for a week or two, then we'll go to every day, and work our way up...but I don't know if there's some sort of upper limit a dog should run or anything, because obviously a dog is built different than a human. She gets so excited about running :D

What type of dog is it? I have some type of 8 month old mix. I brought him on his first 4 miler yesterday but I'm not really sure how long I should go with a pup...

Gym last night - 30 mins on the treadmill (mix of running and walking) and 30 mins weights. I haven't exercised in a while - I've forgotten how nice it feels!

I run with one of my retired racing greyhounds, Cosmo. We get many comments from passerbys as I am a very slow runner so he never breaks out of a brisk walk . Even though most people think of greyhounds rightly as runners, current training and breeding practices are geared for the racetrack so greyhounds are conditioned to be sprinters. I worked very gradually with him until we got up to 2 miles, which I discovered through trial and error was the best distance for him, any longer and he looses interest. We pause every 1/2 mile for him to do some sniffing. Initially he wanted to stop much more frequently but because I run the same route with him, he gradually learned that we have predetermined stopping places. It isn't ideal for me because I would like to run continually and for longer but it is a compromise - I enjoy running with him and want him to enjoy it also!

All dogs aren't created equal in the running department. Some dogs like to run, some don't. I have two that think running is torture created especially for them. Needless to say, they aren't the ones that go out with me. :shy: One bit of advice for anyone running with their pooch....Be careful of the heat, dogs don't 'sweat' like humans do. They regulate their body temperature through panting and their paws. Even when the weather is cooler, it is still important to watch for any signs of overheating or overexertion. Make sure to plan for water stops. I also try to make it a point to head my guy though any puddles while we run. :)

Lastly, I never take Cosmo on any 'important' training runs because I never wanted to be tempted to push him into running longer or faster than he might want. Any run he goes on is one that I am willing to stop at any point and go home. I consider these "his runs"

Dog number 2 (dog number 1 prefers to walk)is a mix, mostly lab. I took her four miles with me and she was hardly tired out  She still needs to learn how to pace herself, she wants to sprint right when we start again after stopping to cross a street. I try to give her verbal cues but she's so excited she can hardly contain herself (she generally listens well, though).

She's young and energetic, she can handle the longer distances :D I found out that one mile is too short for this dog.

Tonight I did 20 minutes on an eliptical, 10 on the stairmaster, and a few arm exercises, plus a short (1 mile?) run to the gym and the walk back. :)
