Need support. My Kita cat has had diebetes for five years now. She is 17 years old and is a lovey.:sunny: She is trained to lie down to get her shots. Lately she has been having more bad days. The vet is surprised that she has been doing so well up to this point. When she has bad days I am a basketcase because there is really nothing I can do to help her. She and I have been together for 15 1/2 years and need to hear from others who have gone through this. The part that really frosts my cheerios is that alot of people told me to put her down when she was diagnosed because her care is too much trouble. Needless to say those people are no longer welcome in my life.Help.

I go to a great site for my cat's kidney problems (CRF). They have a section of links that they feel are good for diabetes http://www.felinecrf.com/links0.htm#15
I haven't looked at them, but maybe they can lead you to a good discussion forum. I found there are lots of people who go to great lengths for their cats with CRF and who share lots of ideas and support. There's got to be something for diabetes cats. When my mom worked for a vet they had lots of cats with diabetes so she knows there are plenty of people who are willing to do the care. I give my cat fluids and several kinds of medicine, but it's no big deal, but sometimes she gives me a hard time or doesn't act well and it's stressful. Good Luck.

bolbear, I strongly recommend the forum at www.felinediabetes.com. I went there a few months ago when I thought I had a diabetic cat (turned out to be a misdiagnosis-- I have a new vet now), and they are a terrific, very knowledgeable, and incredibly supportive group of people. They have been through it, and they know the pain of hearing people say, "Oh, just put your beloved companion to sleep." They hate it just as much as you do. Tell 'em I sent you. They might remember me. I wasn't there very long, though. My bigger problem was a stupid vet.

Sound like you and your Kita have a really special bond. I'll be pulling for her.

oh man.. I had a diabetic dog, but she was so bad off by the time we realized it, it was too late for treatment. That is amazing that your kitty has been able to make it for five years. It must be the wonderful care she gets from her owner :)
