View Full Version : Irresponsible pet owners in my neighborhood (long)

The other day a little beagle looking female dog came to our yard. She was sweet and seemed healthy. We let her have a "play date" with our dog and then we walked all over the subdivision trying to see if anyone knew where she lives. Finally, the last house before we were going to give up for the day knew where she lived. Right next door! He said he'd put her back in her yard.

Today she was back at our house. So my son and I were on our way to take her back to her house (we figured she was getting out of the fence) and a guy who we'd talked to the other day came out and met us. He said the dog was out last night and his grandkids took her back home. Her owner came out and said, "I'm letting her go. That's my kids' dog and I'm sick of fooling with her. I don't want her anymore." Can you believe that? Just letting their dog go!

So we turned around and took her home. She hung out at our house for awhile and then I called a rescue group that I signed up to volunteer with. They said they have no space in their foster homes, but they'd pay for her vet bills and stuff if I'd foster her. So we now have a foster dog...

A couple months ago animal control was in our neighborhood because this female great dane kept getting out and roaming the neighborhood. She could jump their 4 foot fence. Once she cornered a kid and was barking at him until another kid came over with a bat. Fortunately she ran then and no one was hurt. Anyway, the woman at the house where the dog lived pretended to the police and animal control that she had no idea whose dog that was. She acted scared of the dog when it tried to come inside ITS OWN HOUSE! Since the dog was so big, the police officer even had his gun out and pointed at the dog. And the stupid lady didn't even intervene. Fortunately the dog just got up in the animal control truck and so they didn't hurt the dog. Then they left. Before they did, nosy me went over to talk to the police. I told them that that dog IS theirs and it gets out alot. The lady pretended she didn't know the dog because she had gotten tickets in the past for it getting out, according to the police. I didn't call animal control, but I butted in to tell them she was the owner because I had no respect for that lady for just letting her dog be taken like that.

Anyway, I called Great Dane Rescue to give them the heads up that she'd be at the shelter. A week later I was at Petsmart and guess who I saw! Yep, she was there with a rescue organization and someone had applied to adopt her that day! So I was able to give them some background on her and stuff. That felt good.

A few times I've found dogs running around and then I ask around and find their homes. Sometimes I "rescue" them from their own neighborhoods unbeknownst to me and take them home and then call the numbers on their tags and their owners come and pick them up. Oops. Well, their dogs had gotten out and I didn't know from where and I didn't want them to get hit by a car, you know?

So the dog we have now just had an exam and all her tests and shots and she's sleeping in the sun, worn out. Poor girl. She really is sweet. I'll be taking her to Petsmart to show her for adoption Saturday. What if I fall in love with her though? :)

Anybody else do your own rescues? My husband tolerates it, but would prefer I not bring dogs home. But he knew I loved animals when he married me!

Yea, I do that kind of stuff, AND we end up keeping what I rescue. Luckily though I am very good friends with someone who runs a no kill rescue shelter so now, instead of dealing with any dog or cat, I call her. I only do Trapping of feral cats - there is no fear that I will keep any of them!

Animal abandonment is illegal almost everywhere. I hope you took this matter to the police. People need to be held responsible when they're breaking a law that endangers animals, otherwise they just keep doing it.

That's great that you offered to foster her for the shelter! : )

And I'm already loving her, much to my husband's chagrin...

I didn't go to the police for this reason: I didn't want them to take the dog away. I knew that I could help her and I didn't want that lady to get her hands on her again. She could've lied and denied to the police that she said what she said and take the dog back just to dump her somewhere else. I saw what happened with that great dane in my neighborhood and I didn't want animal control to take her away if that lady denied that she was their dog. I know justice isn't being served as far as the lady getting a ticket-but the dog is better off I think.

I'm quite fortunate in that I live in an area where there are very few problems with guardians abandoning their pets, as far as I know. I can honestly, and gladly say that I've never had the occaision to report a neglect or abuse.

That said, I'm not honestly sure about the vacancy of our animal shelter, but I do know that our local TV news stations have adoption segments in which they show off animals that need homes. There's usually quite a response, as well.
