I have heard that a low level of omeag-3 can cause your hair to fall out. I used to take 6 vegicaps of flax oil a day (2 3x a day). I ran out of them and forgot to order some the last time my food group ordered. My hair has been coming out in handfuls and I was wondering if that could be the cause. I should start back up taking them huh?

I don't know if not getting enough causes your hair to fall out but it is very important to get enough omega-3 for other reasons. It's important for the nervous system and that's what motivates me to take it .

i think if your hair is coming out "in handfuls" you should go see a health care practioner. that can be a symptom of many different things, including thyroid imbalace; you should really be evaluated.
i only take straight flax oil a couple of times a week, and my hair is firm in my head.
you can get the omega-3 out of finely ground flax seeds, sprinkled liberally on your food. i like it that way.

i also believe that lack of protien, which is possible depending on your diet is another cause of unusual hair loss.

How much Flax oil should 'we' have per day? I have been steammg veggies for dinner and then pour 2 Tbls. cold pressed flax oil on our veggies for 2 adults, 2 children; but i wonder if that's enough of a daily serving of flax oil for everyone in the family? :confused:

Hi!
I have ground flax seeds and take about 1/8 cup or a little less or so a day. although I ran out for a while there. I just have it with my breakfast, grind and put it over whatever I am eating. I measure it before i grind, I don't think it would hurt for me to have more but it takes so long to grind!! ;)
I think I read that the amount we should have depends on our weight. I thought it was like 1 tablespoon of the oil for every 40kg to 45kg or so.

That whole handful thing does sound weird, maybe I shouldn't post when I am dead tired. What I should have said was that I can run my hands through my hair and pull about a decent sized chunk, probably abut 30 or 40 hairs at a time. I have noticed my hair getting alot thinner lately, and that seems to be the only thing that I have changed about my diet. I eat plenty of beans and nuts, so I don't think that protein is an issue.

After i had my baby my hair started coming out a lot and read that this does happen after pregnancy due to the hormonal changes in my body. How old are you? Maybe your hormones are out of wack?

Beansprout;
That sounds like enough flax oil to me. I've read that 1..2 teaspoons/day is enough for adults 2 tablespoons would be 6 teaspoons for the whole family.
