I was thinking about this today. I love my dogs just as I would a child, so therefore, I would risk my life for my furkids. Does anybody else feel like this? Or am I destitude to be a crazy dog lady? I have visions of myself in overalls,a big hat and like 10,000 dogs in my back yard. :)

I would go into a burning building for my cats. I can't imagine not doing so.

Absolutely! A few years ago I was walking with a friend in my backyard and she was holding my dog's leash. My dog pulled the leash out of her hand and ran onto the highway behind my house, just as a truck came over the hill and into sight. So I ran out to get her. At the time I wasn't even that attached to her, I just didn't think about it.

Being a crazy dog lady doesn't sound like such a bad thing... but 10,000 is a bit much, lol.

Of course I would. I'd protect them just like I would protect my own flesh and blood. I'm sure you all know someone in your life that has said something as incredibly stupid as " It's just an animal " right? Well..those folks shouldnt have companion animals/pets.

I'm not sure. When I heard the stories of the pets that had been abandoned in the face of Katrina, it made me so angry I just wanted to strangle every one of those bastards. And then it got even worse when the rescue teams were forcing evacuees to leave their pets behind! I envisioned myself sitting on my roof with my three cats, telling the rescue teams to go to hell if they won't rescue my "children" too. But I really wonder if I'd have the courage and resolve to really do it. I can't imagine leaving them behind in a horrible situation, but then I remember hearing about the mother and two small children who were being rescued... they were all in very bad shape from dehydration. The two children fell into the water and disappeared, and the mother didn't even seem to notice.

Of course, you're asking this question of a select group of people who probably believe more than most that animals are important and have fundamental rights...

You said it for me, Tess.

BTW- that's a cute Animaniacs avatar.

Anyway- my adopted shelter animals (1 cat, 2 rabbits) are far more than just "property" to me. If I had to evacuate and could only take 2 things with me, it would be two animal carriers- the cat in one, the rabbits in the other.

I don't know. I think I would, but I have a fear that if I were put in a situation like that I would not be as heroic as I think I would be. I don't think I would think about it. I think I would do whatever I could to save any of my family, including my pets. I am not sure whether I would go into a burning house to save the cat though, not because I don't love her, but because I can't find her 90% of the time I try on a good day. i'm not sure it would be wise to run into a burning building, but like I said, I doubt my thinking would be turned on at that point, so who knows what I would do.

It makes me really sad to think about it.

I have before and I would again. It's not something that I thought about. I just ran into traffic to stop a car from running over my escaped kitty.
It's what 'parents' do.

I would absolutely get my cats out first. Then, I'd run in the back door with a bucket and a net and do my absolute best to scoop up my fishie kids and get them out too. As their tank is right by the back door, it wouldn't be hard to get back out. To hell with everything else, it's replaceable.

I can't answer this question without being in such a situation. Perhaps it would depend on the situation itself.

I would think that yes, I'd definetely risk my life to save my pets.

You bet. My two cats are my babies. I'd do everything in my power to protect them.

Well, it definitely depends on the situation. If I actually saw my dog or cat running out in the road about to get hit I would run after it. I would try to catch it. But when it comes to going into a burning house, no. I'm not running into fire. I'm just not ready to leave earth. I have stuff to do. Like bringing other's to Christ. :D

I would like to think I would save my baby boy. Personally, I feel like my puppy is an innocent and it is my responsibility to protect him and love him. Recently I came between him and someone trying to attack him-I knew I could possibly be beaten up, but I stood my ground. Luckily, there were witnesses, so it didn't advance that far. But I was willing to do anything to protect him. Call me crazy or stupid, but I love my baby! :smitten:

I would risk my life to save my dogs.
I have skinkids & furkids - the skinkids would come first then my furkids second.

I love my (fur)babies more than anything except some people, so I like to think I would. But it all depends on the situation, and I couldn't know until then. Also, though it sounds mean, I would risk more for my cat than my rats. I have had her longer, and also she has a lot more years of life ahead of her than they do.

depends on the situation and, alhough I know it sounds bad, it depends on the animal.

If I had time to think and it was a deliberate decision, I'd probably have doubts. Although I can't imagine myself hearing that there was going to be a hurricaine and being like, "'later. Hope you're good at treading water." but after sitting on a roof for two weeks with my animals and everyone being dehydrated... in a situation like that, staying on that roof wouldn't save my animals, so I might have to just say godbye.

When it comes to instinct, though, I would and have put my life before my dog's. Another (very large) dog attacked us (when I was eleven and very very small for my age) and I got in the middle. I got bitten and thrown against a fence and my hand was cut open (I'll show you the scars if you ask nicely.) but the big dog ran away before doing too much damage. It was instinct in that case, though. Daisy was my best friend and she would have done the same for me.

Way I see it, if I die, at least I won't give a sh*t.

I can't imagine not saving any animal if it were in my power to do so. My family is the same way, before our dog maggie came to live with us she lived with our neighbors. Once they let her get out and were trying to get her while my mom was outside, a car was about to hit her and they didn't do anything, and my mom ended up running out in front of a car and almost getting hit to save their dog. Of course, that, plus about 3092304832 other horrible things caused her to come live with us.

I would. Ive almost been hit by cars ( i mean, i can feel the car swatting my jacket close) saving froggies.
When i was a kid whenever there would be any sort of stir in the henhouse or barn, id be the first one out there with my little boots and a shovel to take anything on!!
When i was 9, my neighbors came over with thier large dog, a rottweiler, german shepard, dobermin pincher mix..a weird combonation, but it was a nice dog. anywho, at our place, with the exceptions of a horse, all our animals were free to walk around the yard wherever they wanted, especially the chickens. One day the neighbors came over and their dog followed, a big no no. Anywho, the dog quickly began chasing one of my hens. I ran after the dog, but obviously wasnt as fast. The chicken wedged herself uder the barn, but couldnt get in furthur, so the dog began to tear at her back with its claws. As soon as i caught up i picked up the first stick i could and began screaming at the dog and hitting it as hard as a nine year old girl can hit a 100 pound dog. I began to try and pull him off, but he kept growling at me, so i continued to attack him with the stick til he got the message and ran off. I grabbed my battered chicken, and ran inside crying my eyes out. My mother was SO upset with me, because it was only us kids and the dog could have very easily turned on em and killed me, but that didnt matter. she survived and lived to be about 10 years old, pretty good for a chicken. My mum still gets mad over that story.

I would risk my life for my pet. I think would also risk my life for any animal (human too) because I have been in that situation and I just reacted on instinct.

i wouldn't think twice about risking my own life for my pets' - i couldn't live with the guilt if i just left them in a dangerous situation. i thought i was a crazy for having this opinion but i'm glad i'm not the only one!

I'd risk my life to save ANY animal's life, not only my pet's life. I really don't like the attitude of being oh so considerate about your own companion animals. What about cows, pigs, chickens, wild animals etc.?

We look at our pets like our children, so YES I would!
