I recently got out all my dad's old vinyl and have been playing it obsessively on my turntable. Even though I do have a working record player I'd really like to convert the vinyl to mp3, but I have no idea how to do this. what software do I need to do this? how do I connect the turntable to the computer? I know nothing:confused: If anyone could help me that would be great!

Quick list of steps.

Connect the sound output of the turntable to the input of the computer.
Record each record into one long audio (.wav) file.
Use sound editing software to break the long audio file into many files, dividing the files up by tracks.
Use an encoder to convert the .wav files to .mp3s. (Or keep them as .wavs for high quality.

You will need a good audio table, a good soundcard, some sound editing software, and an encoder.

I'm not an audiophile, they would probably know more about doing it. But that's how I would do it.

I have a link featuring comprehensive info on this very topic Carrot, if I can find it... I'm confident I will, and anyways I am sorting my links and casual data anyway so I am sure to. :)
It was something I found for punkmommy who had the same intention as you a couple of years ago and I think possibly punkmommy maybe still finding the time for when she can look into it more. However she may by now have at least the knowledge of how to do this I would think, given the time she's spent thinking about it, so why not ask her for instuction? :)
She ought be able to give you some clue. and my link I gave to her with the applicable website that I mention above, so if I unexpectedly don't have it, either way she will for sure too. (if I don't find it first in amongst my saved data/bookmarks etc).
