View Full Version : Why Won't Charlie Love the Pug?

I'm sad  I brought my cat, Charlie, home from my parents' house to my new house and he is scared of my roommate's pug! They are about the same weight/height so I wouldn't think that he would be intimidated, but everytime we try to put them together Charlie hisses and his hair stands on end. He lived with a much tinier dog at my parents' house and had no problems.

The pug is really curious about the cat but doesn't bite or anything that would make him be afraid. I don't know what to do, right now I have my cat chilling in my room. Will they ever be friends?

Give them some time to get used to each other, in separate rooms, then gradually get them together. You might get a baby gate to put between parts of the house, so pug can be in one part and Charlie in another, and they can see each other through the gate.

They may be friends eventually, the trick is patience. Cats can get a bit weird about who they like and don't like.
I'd say separate them for a couple of days and then SLOWLY reintroduce them to each other. The baby gate is a good idea. You gotta give your cat some time to get used to the idea of living with a dog. And also, make sure that your cat has a way to escape the dog if he starts to get overwhelmed.

How long have they been together?

Cats can take weeks to months to get used to ANY new animal, another cat, a dog, whatever you've got. I wouldn't give up too quickly. Introduce them VERY slowly, probably with the dog confined would be best since they can be a bit too hyper for cats to deal with if they're not used to the dog.

That baby gate idea is great! I'm going to try it later tonight. Strangely enough, even though my roommate and I are single college students we have a baby gate. Go figure.

It's been a year and half and my cat Sputnik only now doesn't try to murder the dog.

My husband and I had to segregate our cats for *years* with baby gates, because my cat was trying to kill his cat....eventually, when they were very old, they got along....

I saw a great idea on Animal Planet yesterday, on a show about getting animals better adapted to where they are/used to other animals.

Rub down one of the animals with a towel, so that their scent gets on it, and put it near/under the food trays of the other. The other animal will associate the scent with something good (food) and they'll form a bond through scent.

Looks like Pug has a rub down with a towel in his future...

Well, just incase anyone was curious.. last night the roommate and I put both animals on the floor and Charlie didn't hiss, even when Pug play-bit his ear. Yay!

Wow, that was a fast adjustment period! I'm glad it's going better so soon.

My cat is awesome at judging dogs. He just seems to know right off the bat whether a dog is a threat or not.
