so do you agree or not?

i think that humans are evil, and are destroying everything around them.
but to be honest when i first heard of this, it really made me uneasy. so i dont think i'd agree with it. i do think that people need to not produce as much... i mean, there are so many unwanted/abandoned/starving children out there.. it's rediculus!!! but i dont think that complete extinction is the solution.

I've seen this before. I do think the idea has it's merits in a way, but it would be impossible to execute in the end. Stopping people reproducing is tantamount to trying to convince the population of the world to go on a grapefruit diet.

Exactly, not possible.

There is already an involuntary human extinction program taking place.

Umm...that's just scary.

I do have to agree that the picture on the bottom made me chuckle, though.

i fully agreed with it when i first heard about it (when i was 12 or 13). i don't know now.

Just plain stupid. It isn't humans that are the problem, it's our current dominant culture of endless growth and consumption.

Ya... and the less humans, the less of a problem this would be.

I'm not a human hater, myself. If these people hate humans so much, maybe they should extinctify themselves first.

....the middle-eastern god, Yahweh/Jehovah/Allah. Tradition tells how, in prehistoric times, this creator-god realized his mistake in making humans and was going to flush us from the system, but in a weak moment he spared one breeding family. Oops!

From the site:
We're not just a bunch of misanthropes and anti-social, Malthusian misfits, taking morbid delight whenever disaster strikes humans. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Voluntary human extinction is the humanitarian alternative to human disasters.

We don't carry on about how the human race has shown itself to be a greedy, amoral parasite on the once-healthy face of this planet. That type of negativity offers no solution to the inexorable horrors which human activity is causing.

Ok, but I tend not to believe them, since they can't differentiate between humans and the particular destructive activities of the current dominant culture. Humans were able to live on the planet for 100,000 years with little destruction, relative to the destruction our culture has caused in the last 8000 years or so, accelerating during the past 200 years to the point we see it now. I'd like people to be able to make a distinction between humans, who have had a variety of cultures, and our culture, which is distinctively destructive. No need to wipe out humans when we can change our culture.

Without humans, every living thing on earth is wiped out in a few billion years, no memories left. (Perhaps most life will die out sooner -- "mother nature" is not above trying to kill her most of her offspring. Astroids. Solar fluctuations. Natural ecological disasters. Etc.)

With humans, perhaps we'll leave a memory down the road which will outlast this sun and this earth. I hope so.

I don't expect humans to outlast the earth and sun, personally. I expect we'll go extinct like other animals. But no need to rush into it! We're a relatively young species. If we go extinct because we get smacked by an asteroid, ok, but if we go extinct because we're too short-sighted and stupid to change our destructive behavior, well, that doesn't do much toward proving we're intelligent, conscious beings, does it?

>(person writing a letter)Goodness, I've NEVER in my life heard of anything as STUPID as voluntarily making the human race become extinct. <

(site creator)How about involuntarily making the human race extinct? Wouldn't that be more stupid? We're working hard toward this goal, degrading our life support systems

Hmmm. You know, that makes sense. I'm not so sure about their main goal, but some of their ideas are quite appealing.

I don't think the human species will outlast the sun and earth, but the legacy of the human species, and our intellectual decendents may.

Is this org related to the church of euthanasia? They had the slogan "save the planet, kill yourself" lol

well they kind of do have a point, the only problem that i see here that it's the people that realize how much we harm the planet that don't want to reproduce, the ones that harm it the most don't give a damn ..... so what's gonna happen is this : the ones that don't care will reproduce and reproduce and the planet is going to end up the same exact way ........ so what's the point of voluntary extinction then ? .... exactly ..... no point ... so maybe people that care can make kids that care and maybe we will get more reasonable ......

That's what happened to the Shakers (and I'm sure countless other societies.)

I do kind of align myself with their beliefs. I'm not into procreation myself when there are so many people out there who need homes (adoption.) I think the World needs less new people and more caring for the ones we've already got.

Vicky, I totally agree with you. This sounds like the same thing I said in the adoption thread about veg*n's and environmentalists choosing not to have kids. We'll stop having kids, but the people who don't give a damn will continue to reproduce, and then their children won't care, either.

I thought at the time that I was just really disturbed but I am glad to see that other people agree with me.

I don't think we need to go all the way to extinction, but negative population growth (for a while) and change in life style are certainly desirable. Plus, it doesn't seem morally correct to create children as long as there are any in need of a loving home.
