Does anyone know of a good haircolor, one that covers gray :furious:, lasts (doesn't fade), and is gentle to the hair?
I've been using Revlon Colorsilk, and was happy b/c it's cheap & not tested on animals, but It's really been drying out my hair and it fades really quick too.
Advice?

You could try henna if you're up to it, its more work but its actually good for your hair.

Henna is good for your hair. You can buy a prepared packages at a local indian grocery store.
What color is your hair?
There is a natural hair dye that doesnt contain amonnia at a local HFS.

Are you using a permanent color? Semipermanent? Either way, the color will fade. When I'm trying to keep lasting color, I try not to wash my hair every day, and every other day condition it (no shampoo) so I only wash my hair with a minimal amount of shampoo once or twice a week at the most. With permanent colors, you might be able to do it twice a week.
Even now that I dye maybe every other month, I still deep condition like I was bleaching and dying more often. The stuff I use is totally non vegan, so I won't even get into that, but everyone on this board seem to love Paul Mitchell's deep conditioners. Deep conditioners, leave in conditioners, hot oil treatments... My hair loves these, and I've been able to restore my hair back to the original pre dye and bleached state.
Manic Panic is vegan and not tested on animals, but the only 'natural' color they make is black, unless you're up to mixing colors. And, even then they don't last terribly long.
I'd just stick with the Revlon, and maybe try the 'High Dimension' line they sell, if they have a similar color to see if that helps any.

Thanks for the replys!
I've been using permanent hair color. My hair is medium brown. Is there someplace where you buy henna other than an indian grocery store? I don't know of one around me.
Thanks katt. That makes sense not to wash everyday. I never thought about using conditioner without shampooing! That would give the fresh washed feel and smell without the harshness of the shampoo. Great tip!
I really appreciate the replys!

Is it the 4 dollar one?, that is what I buy too.I have to buy two boxes, so I like that it is so cheap.
It has been drying my hair out as well. I use a red, and I am looking for something better too!
I am willing to pay more for it though, what should I care. I already buy 9 dollar tampons and 3 dollar energy bars and chips!

I use Robert Craig. It doesn't damage your hair, no peroxide or ammonia. The brown stays really well, although the red doesn't (red never does). http://www.merchantamerica.com/robertcraig/index.php?ba=home
They don't test, but it just occured to me that I don't know if there's animal products IN them. That would just be weird....

You can find henna at a lot of beauty supply stores. I went to my healthfood store to find some, and they only had henna tattoos! If you really want to try henna and can't find it at a store, you can find it online as well. Try looking in the phonebook in the yellow pages under "health and beauty" or something. I've been looking into henna myself- I've heard that you have to dye it about every 6 weeks to keep the color and getting the wrong color can be a pain but I dunno, I would get professional advice on it if it's something your really interested in.
p.s. hot oil treatments ROCK for dry hair!

You have to do your color every six weeks or so anyway so a henna is definitely your best bet is you are into the natural products. It does leave a wicked build - up on your hair though so your ends get really dark after a while!
A semi-permanent will be about every 4 weeks but doesn't leave the nasty colour line that a permi does and the good semis contain no ammonia - way better for skin, water system, etc.
Pick a colour close to your natural (before the grey!!) and a semi will no give too much of a regrowth line at all. I like Casting ColorSpa from Loreal. Nice smell fab conditioner too!
