View Full Version : Frozen Dinners

Being the poor person that I am, I often buy the dollar frozen dinners, like budget gourmet. But last night I found out many of my meatless favorites CONTAIN MEAT! Just like all these other things. So I thought I'd mention that the bottom of the ingredients list where it says contains soy blah blah is wrong. They don't count chicken fat or stuff like that as meat. Disgusting. I'm sure most of you already read the lists, but just a warning in case you don't.

 Another member just mentioned this recently too about the Michellina's meals. I know that time and money are often factors in buying frozen meals...But one is much better off preparing healthful, homemade meals :)

actually, meat is never listed under "contains:". only milk, wheat, peanuts/nuts, and soy are listed when applicable.

Yeah, those little "Contains..." warnings are for people who suffer allergies, so they only list the most common allergens. They never seem to include poultry, beef or pork. I find that odd because I know someone who is allergic to pork. At least she claims to be. My experience is that the kosher label is a better place to get a quick clue about things we don't want to eat.

When I buy frozen meals, I stick to the ones that I find in the HFS such as Wild Oats and Whole Foods, such as the Amy's line. Some of them can also be found in the mainstream supermarkets. These are vegetarian, and some of them are vegan. Yes, they are much more expensive than the budget frozen meals, but that guarantees I don't buy too many of them.

Well, the only things are where I live now I can't cook, only microwave, and I don't really have the budget for the healthier meals that I would prefer... the ones I get are $1 a pop... heh...

Can you afford $20 for a rice cooker? Bulk grains are really inexpensive.
Re labels: I find it downright hysterical that non-dairy creamers almost always contain casien or whey.

so do i, anthony. it's frustrating, though, to explain to people that "no, i CAN'T have the international delight creamer because it DOES have milk products in it"...

Yes, I found that out a couple of weeks ago. Many of the budge gourmet meals were vegan or vegetarian and then all of a sudden they added meat flavors to almost all of them. I was so mad.

There are some soups in a cup where you just add hot water... lots of healthy ones like bean and lentil and minestrone... and they just cost $1 or so. Or canned soup is another option.

Well the soups in cups might work, but I can't cook anything in a pot or on the stove or anything... it has to be ready made or microwaveable... :( Soon I'll have my own apartment and won't be living here... but right now I'm homeless so I have to deal I guess.

Boil water for ramen or cup-o-soup in a coffee cup in the microwave.

And watch out for any ingredient list that says natural flavoring. Many times that means animal fat.

Great news... the microwave turns white hot and showers sparks on whatever you put in it now, so I don't have to worry about frozen dinners :-P

No, I think it's just old. Guess I need a plan b now, or I'll only eat when I can use the microwave at work...

:vebo: :vebo: I cannot LIVE without my rice cooker.
(Yeah, I know, that had nothing to do with the thread, but I just had to post that bit of randomness anyway...)

Well, my bf has a rice cooker, but I really don't know much about cooking with it besides making rice. He has only used it once and of course threw away all instructions...
