I just finished gathering up all of my chickens bodies. For everyone who doesn't know, they were the only casualties in my family caused by hurricane Rita. I think that a dog got a few of them, and the others tried to run and ended up running out into the rain and wind. Three of them lived, but I can only find two of them. Right now they are in a temporary pen until we can get their chicken coop back up. I had put them in my shed last night before the storm hit and I didn't close the door properly and they pushed it open or the wind blew it, I'm not really sure. I found their bodies scattered in my yard and in my neighbors yard. One of them was missing a head, it was really awful to clean up. I think my neighbors chickens are all fine and their ducks are okay. I wish I would have put them in my garage or something but I thought they would be fine in the shed. They would have been if I knew how to close a stupid door
I'm really sorry you lost your chickens, FG. Just be glad they were the only casualties.

Sorry to hear that! I used to have chickens and really enjoyed having them. Don't hit yourself over their deaths, predators of chickens will do anything to get at them and there was probably nothing you could do. My chickens were killed despite the cage being closed and there being thick wire around the entire cage! Racoons got in there anyway...
I'm so sorry about your chickies, FG. :( Sometimes it seems like chickens are a death magnet. :(

I found the last living chicken. She was thirsty and came back to look for water and I caught her. I didn't know it was so difficult to catch chickens :help: . They are all really hand shy now, before I could pet them while feeding them. Now, I can't even touch them. Hopefully they will settle down after a few days.

:( I'm so sorry you lost your chickens, I can't even image how heartbreaking that would be.

poor gals :( glad a few of them made it. i'm sure they'll settle down, they've been through a traumatic experience, they might be nervous for a bit. i wouldn't worry about it too much.
don't blame yourself, it was probably the wind that blew the door open, not much you could've done
