OK, since I discovered that head and shoulders is part of P&G, as well as my beloved Aussie, I have been searching for a good vegan shampoo/conditioner. My hair gets dandruff really easy, and I can use regular shampoo (like Aussie) only for about a week and then I get dandruff again. Head and Shoulders is the only thing that seems to work. I've heard that tea tree oil is good for helping with dandruff, but when I used it, I didn't like it. Any suggestions? I just found a very local store that sells Jason hair care products, as well as Nature's gate, and this other "natural henna lightening" shampoo. Are these any good? I have very thick, unruly hair that is difficult at times. I also straighten my hair and use Revlon Heat Glide Serum- I know they don't test on animals, and didn't see any animal by-products or anything on the ingredients list. Does anyone else straighten their hair and use a vegan heat glide thing? Also, has anyone used henna dyes? I've heard very mixed reviews on it. I've been wanting to dye my hair sooo bad-it's been the same brown for almost 2 years now (I've been cutting off the former "fried and dyed" stuff). Can you dye your hair one color with henna (like red) and then move to a darker color (like dark brown/black)? Any help at all would be great!

Henna can be difficult to lift and or dye on top of. I use Raw, Special Effects and sometimes Manic Panic, which are all Vegan.

Lush has a 'Shampoo for Vegans', there are two kinds, one for normal and one for thick hair. It's a little expensive.

Arbonne's Anti-Flake Shampoo is fantastic for this problem. I'd be happy to mail you a sample if you'd like. I wish I could help you more with the hair color question.

I don't know about dark on top of light, but right now my boss accidentally used the wrong color henna on her roots so she has dark hair and purplish roots where her gray is. She hasn't been able to get it out but she hasn't dyed on top of it yet either. I don't shampoo my hair so I have no idea about good vegan shampoos, sorry :)

Send ~Brandon a PM - he's answered some hair-color questions in the past and gave me some good reccomendations for shampoos and stuff too...
BTW, my hair is beyond "unruly" - though I don't have the dandruff issue to complicate things... the Lush brand conditioner (um.... can't remember what it's called - Jungle-something... it's VERY good - though expensive)
... I use a Paul Mitchel shampoo as they don't test on animals either - they have a good dandruff/tea-tree-oil shampoo too I think....

^ Lush is the best. I love how you can smell the shop before you see it.

I will have to try Lush's 'Jungle' conditioner, TNS. They do a vegan liquid one too called Veganese. Many of their shampoos are vegan too, ikisstrees - I think including the anti-dandruff one which I think is called soak and float (I haven't used it myself and apparantly it smells icky though!)
Paul Mitchell's shampoos are great, though again I've not tried the anti-dandruff one.

Wow, thanks for the help! Yeah, the henna seems a little risky, I've had some pretty bad hair experiences in the past but I've been able to dye over them! I'll try looking at those vegan dyes- I'm so excited! I've heard really good things about Beauty Without Cruelty-do they sell it in stores? I love shopping on the internet, just not usually with clothes or make-up because of colors/size differences. I'd love to try the Lush stuff-if it's worth the price, I'll buy it! I think I'm going to go to my local healthfood store to see if I can find these products (the last time I was in there I didn't have time to shop around).
SallyK- I have been pondering what to order off of arbonne.com for a while now, don't worry, I'm just trying to save up money(I have a spending problem!) to buy a whole bunch of stuff-I've heard nothing but great stuff about it!

Does anyone use this "90%" natural hair-dye called Herbatint? It looked pretty cool, and its permanent. Just wondering if anyone knew if it was 100% vegan. When I typed in vegan hair dye on google, that was what I found.

One of my friend loathes Lush for just this reason. We had to walk by the shop several times on a recent trip to San Francisco and he held his breath until we were upwind every time.

If you are willing to get something not natural (like lush) you might as well go the Paul Mitchell route. It is comparably priced, objectively at least as good as lush, and gives you more options. Last I checked not all vegans have the same hair type, though lush seems to hold this opinion.

What colour is your hair now? You can take Manic Panic Flaming (red) and put it over almost any shade of hair and it will give you a gorgeous red tone to your hair. You can do this with a lot of their darker colours actually. Just slather it on and keep it one for 3 hours or so. Take a nap or go to sleep. It's totally safe, I've kept Manic Panic on overnight. :)

What worked really well for my hair was Arbonne's Anti-Flake shampoo. I have really bad dry scalp that itched all of the time and got flakes too and have tried a lot of shampoos to help the condition and so far Arbonne has been great!!! I love this stuff!!

I've been using Kiss My Face shampoo and conditioner, which are vegan. They're great for my hair, which is also very thick and is naturally curly,

My hair is naturally a dark brown-it seems so boring. I like change in hair color, I haven't found one that I really like-it's too light, dark, or red whenever I dye it. I have dark brown eyes and fair skin, so finding a hair color besides my own to complement it nicely is hard. I like weird colors like Manic Panic offers, so I'll probably try those out!
About lush, exactly what kind of smell is it? I have very weird reactions to some smells so could anyone explain or compare the smell of it?
I really want to try arbonne's anti-flake stuff, but for $24 a bottle it would really have to be worth it. I want to start trying all these different products out now so when I'm actually a vegan I'll already know what I want to use.
I liked Kiss My Face's peaches and creme lotion, unfortunately, it's not vegan (according to another post one here) because it contains 8%AHA. Their shampoos and stuff are vegan though, just not the detangler.

my new favorite vegan hair products are by giovanni hair care (http://www.giovannicosmetics.com/index.html). my hair got pretty "crunchy" and since i started using their 50/50 line (shampoo (http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/browse/sku_detail.jhtml;$sessionid$PRYD3LU400ALQCQUAOYCFE QKCQB00GXK?SkuID=10530&BreadCrumbType=SearchResult) + conditioner (http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/browse/sku_detail.jhtml;$sessionid$QYMWVGR3PFZDECQUAOYCFE QKCQB00GXK?SkuID=10535&BreadCrumbType=SearchResult)), it's silky smooth! i also use their frizz be gone (http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/browse/sku_detail.jhtml;$sessionid$PRYD3LU400ALQCQUAOYCFE QKCQB00GXK?SkuID=218322&BreadCrumbType=SearchResult), which works just as its name suggests. and! they are reasonably priced. i've found their products at small natural food stores and large chains like whole foods. good luck!

Wow, I can't believe that! I went to my health food store a few days ago and I got Jason's Tea Tree Oil shampoo and conditioner (it was on a good sale so I decided to try it first). I also got giovanni's frizz be gone (that's the freaky part since you just mentioned it)!!! I LOVE it! I have never had a better hair serum! I am sooo excited. It now only takes me like 15 (as opposed to 30) minutes to straighten my hair. Since I have made the switch, my hair is soo much softer and shinier (and no, it's not the placebo effect). People have told me how much better my hair looks. Other things they had there that I wonder if anyone has used-
Avalon Organics (there are A LOT of these products)
Zia makeup
Eco (something) Laundry Detergent
They also had BWC and Kiss my face (after my bottle of Jason's run out I will try these- the BWC smells soo good!). I LOVE healthfood stores!!!!
