More than 700 chickens left to die in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina were transported Monday morning to Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen.
Over the weekend, staff and volunteers from the animal welfare organization helped rescue the birds from a destroyed poultry farm in rural Mississippi. Three of the farm's sheds, each containing tens of thousands of birds, were leveled in a tornado spawned by the hurricane...
Poor chickies, I'm glad they were saved. What a irresponsible farmer. But anyone farming for Tyson, well, I don't have anything good to say about them. "Incredibly stupid" is maybe the kindest thing I could say.

In defense of the farmer, what is he do to with chickens in the path of a hurricane, especially that many?
Not that that justifies any of the many other wrongs the farmer has certainly done to his chickens, but don't blame him/her for that, too.
As an former-owner of chickens (damn racoons), I can say that they are quite hard to travel with.
I guess it's inevitable with a farm like that. One more reason to be against animal agriculture of that nature (or maybe of any nature).
I'm glad they were rescued. Maybe we should give an extra donation to Farm Santuary?

I meant it was irresponsible of him to bulldoze living animals into a mass grave.
When hurricanes hit Cuba, they evacuate people and chickens. I think for the next hurricane evacuation plans, the Cubans should be asked for advice on how to do it. They seem to have it worked out very well indeed.
Chickens are probably considered far more valuable in Cuba than they are here. Here they are obviously considered an expendable resource, not worth saving.
Ah... I was only pulling legs. It's because I had just read one of Chavez's speeches that he gave where he mentioned Cuban chickens.
I was being serious! :) They really probably do value chickens more in Cuba!
