Why can't vegans wear wool? I mean in the summer time wouldn't the sheep be hot in their coats? Also I thought wool can be obtained safely. Is it? :dizzy:

Vegans "can" wear wool. We choose not to.

Because wool is often obtained by cruel means.Even though the animal is kept alive ,the shearing process can be very stressful and painful. The animals are shipped in inhuman conditions and basically live a stressful, slave life....for YOUR wool sweather.

You can also go to my web site for more info.

Peta has gained new ground recently,on the treatment of sheep for the production of wool. The Austrailian Gov. has just agreed to phaze out the cruel practice of Museling, where are chunks of the lambs backsides are removed. This will occur by 2010.

The PIONT is to live a life, with LESS reliance on the slavery/death/suffering of animals for your convienience.

Oh. I never knew that. The reason I asked is because I found these old ugg boots in my closet that still fit me. I think I'll donate them to charity.

I think if one is absolutely certain of where the wool comes from so one is sure that the sheep live happy lives and are sheared with love and care, and also that these sheep will not later be dragged off for slaughter-house, I see no problem in wearing wool. Animals and humans are allowed to help each other out in life - a kind of give and take. As long as the give and take is humane and just, I have no problem wearing wool. (Actually, I do - I cannot wear wool because my skin is allergic to it, but that is another story.)

The trouble is, it is very hard to know where one's wool is coming from, and in that case I think it's better to avoid it altogether. Most commercial wool comes from sad little sheep and not happy little sheep. :(

vegans don't wear wool because it's taken from an animal. you can obtain eggs without harming chickens, but vegans still don't eat them. i'm sure it's possible to obtain wool without harming the sheep, but i'm also sure that's not the way most wool is produced/obtained. i haven't done any research on the practices of the wool industry, though, so i don't have any information to give you.

Is "felt" wool? Can it be something else?

i am a vegan, and i use wool. Why? because it is LOCALLY produced wool. I know the person who keeps the sheep, and they're vegan as well. the sheep are sheared when it is definitely safe to do so, and they are sheared in a very kind fashion, nothing traumatic. they seem to like it, too...

i won't use commercially produced wool, but I will buy the wool that Leslie's family spins and sells, because i know that they love their sheepsies :)

Well my wool boots were DEFINATLY NOT locally grown, so I'll send my boots to charity.

kudos for you for sending off the boots to charity! if you know of a charity that wont sell them but give them away that would be the best place to donate them. I'm a penniless vegan who wears old animal products frm my closet and will accept some FREE clothing made frm animal products. but i wont buy new animal products. I feel mildly hypocritcal doing that sometimes but if i dont have an alternative (ie i was just given leather winter boots, and i took them cause I dont have any boots and i'll need/use them where i live)

Do they let the sheep live out a natural life? Or do they sell/kill them?
