"When I contact the schools they say, 'Is this to promote hunting?' " Mr. Hoyt said. "And actually I lie right through my teeth. I say, 'No, it is to explain hunting.' "

"Forty years from now our kids will be learning about this as history," said Larry Gauthier, one of Mr. Hoyt's buddies on the bear hunt. "Hunters should be included as an extinct species because we're falling away so fast, we need to be protected."
Good! I'd be glad to put them on the extinct list, though I'm afraid that I know far too many hunters myself to think they're actually a dying breed.\
And I'm moving this to the Heap to save myself the trouble later.
That's right kids, we're doing them a favor. Because if we don't shoot them, they might die.

Other than the whole omni thing, why is there such a hatred of hunters on this board?
I think I'd rather be a deer killed by a hunter then a chicken raised for meat. The deer's life isn't utter hell, and a hunter's bullet is probably on par (if not better) for pain and suffering when compared to typical ways deer die.
So why such a hatred of hunters specifically? I don't see posts on veggieboards strongly condemning lions for killing antelope. Or for wolves tearing down a young deer. So why hunters?

Because disagreement is strongly discouraged?

That has been discussed before in other threads. If you care to discuss that please post in one of those.

You don't see the difference between lions and a humans?
Mr. Hoyt, a father of five children under age 13, says he is committed to recruiting younger hunters.
"My youngest child was with me when he was 2 months old and I shot a deer with a muzzle loader," he said. "He was in a backpack. I was stuck home baby-sitting and I felt like hunting."

Whatever, there's plenty of literature available on the morality of consuming animals. The lions and Wolves should know better.

From the article: ""Isn't it better to kill them than to have them die of disease or starvation?""
Err, actually it is NOT. They talk about money from hunting licenses being used to help preserve species of animals, but how are the animals going to evolve with resistance to disease and starvation, it hunters kill them off before natural selection does? They are talking out of both sides of their mouth. Plus, unlike other predators, which manage to catch the slowest runners, and least neurologically adept at waryness, the hunter with a high powered rifle can kill off the fast runners, and often some of the most wary animals, tho wariness and ability to hide is indeed a protection against predation by humans.
And black bears -- to be stuffed? I don't like that at all. I can see fowl, to eat -- better than chicken mcnuggest for the kids. Or even deer, to eat. But bear, to stuff? That is not my idea of hunting as a means of food acquistion and survival.

das nut I don't see posts on veggieboards strongly condemning lions for killing antelope. Or for wolves tearing down a young deer. So why hunters?
Well, now you do. I am against lions killing anteloupe. And I have made numerous posts against domestic cats killing birds and small mammals.
If we really cared about animals, we'd try to save the lives of prey animals, by hunting down and killing predators such as wolves, felines, foxes, etcetera. No, we can't kill human predators. But we can set an example of living without killing animals for food clothing and shelter, and show them how much fun we are having doing that.
What.... the.... hell....?
"He added, "I hate to stereotype, but most teachers are liberal, tree-hugging, and they're not real sympathetic to the cause."
Actually, my seventh grade history teacher was an avid deer hunter and fisherman. I'm sure he was for "the cause". He constantly made fun of my vegetarianism. While I have met a lot of "liberal" teachers (I do live in Kansas where it is a mainly republican state so it is rarer to find them), they are hardly "tree-hugging".
Well. I fully support this moron... As long as the bears and whatever else he may be shooting at are also given guns and trained to shoot the hunters so it's all fair game.*
*Just to clairfy this all, just to prevent anyone from jumping all over me because I said that, this is SARCASM. I do not support hunting. Alright?

This is cruelty to a very young baby. One of the only things babies are naturally afraid of is loud noises. And yet this father exposed his baby to a very loud noise because he "felt like hunting.":wall:

As far as I know it's not as common as the hunting of deer, moose or various birds, but it's pretty common. It's allowed (I'm assuming) because black bears aren't a threatened species and, above all, people want to be able to shoot them. Bears can get to be an inconvenience in large numbers near cities as well, and I can imagine people using the old "pest control" excuse.
Kids learning to take pleasure in killing things always bothers me.
Bears can get to be an inconvenience in large numbers near cities as well,
Humans can get to be an inconvenience in large numbers near bear habitat.

I'll definitely agree with you there, Ludi. I'm just answering Kpickell's question with reasons that most people would give. I used to live in an area where there were a lot of bears that were socialised to look to humans for food. They could be very dangerous. This certainly isn't the bears' fault, but unfortunately most people just don't care.

No kidding. My first thought was "I hope he put some ear protection on that kid". Muzzle loaders are freaking LOUD.

How common is bear hunting . . .
According to the 2001 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation, (http://federalaid.fws.gov/surveys/surveys.html) there are about 360,000 hunters who sought Big Game: Bear. I believe that number has gone up in the last 4 years.
