View Full Version : My Bizarre Cat

Hi, I've always been a dog person, but about seven months ago, I got a kitten and he's rather odd. For example, he follows me everywhere. He'll wait outside of the bathroom door until I come out and then he'll do a sneak attack and latch on to my leg. When he's tired, he likes to slap my hand with his (no claws) and then he'll bite my hand and then he'll lick it. Why? I don't get it.He likes to sit on my chest when I'm trying to read in bed, and when I turn out the lights he likes to sleep right next to my head if not directly on it.
I've also never seen a cat eat so much. One morning I woke up and he had tipped over the cat food bag and all I could see was his little orange tail sticking out. Now we have to clip the cat food bag, so he'll stay out of it, but then he always meow's and wines at his food dish. So then I decide to feed him to make him shut up, but then he'll eat like three bites of food and it's like he just had a liter of Mountain Dew because he goes biserk and all you can see is this little orange flash as he zips about the house. Does anyone else have a similar cat? I think mine has graduated from toddler to little kid and he's just obnoxious. So how do you deal with your hyperactive cats? :stinkeye:

Awww :smitten: Congrats on allowing a kitty in your life. Challenging, but very rewarding.

I've had two cats for the past 7 1/2 years and I'm here to tell you, your cat is perfectly normal.

Attacking your leg: Normal. Cats are attracted to anything that moves. Go to the pet store and get a cat teaser. Wave it in front of him and watch him attack it. He'll have loads of fun and get some exercise, too.

Eating just a few bites of food: Normal. Cats, unlike dogs, are grazers. They nibble throughout the day instead of wolfing everything down at once, like dogs do.

Climbing inside the bag of food: Normal. And funny as hell. I once left a bag of cat food sitting out. It was brand new and I hadn't opened it yet. I walked into the kitchen later and discovered that Sabrina had chewed a hole in the bag and was nibbling what fell out.

If your kitten is strictly an indoor cat, expect him to go "crazy" every so often and zoom around the house like he's on drugs. He'll have a lot of pent-up energy that he needs to release. Normal.

Sleeping on your chest? Sleeping next to your head? Consider it a compliment. My cat Sabrina will cmpletely take over my pillow and allow very little of it for my head. You are the "parent" in his life now. He wants to be near you, and maybe even protect you when you are sleeping and at your most vunerable.

Your "bizarre" cat sounds completely normal to me...

Sounds like a cat to me! :) Nothing too weird there. You'll get used to cat ownership. People who haven't owned cats before don't really understand how interactive and "into" things they are!

I've had plenty of kittens before and this behavior is not bizarre...it's perfectly normal!!

he sounds like a cutie :smitten:

mine is an indoor-only, he's about 6 years old now, and let me tell you... they don't outgrow that stuff. ever.
at 6 he still:
-pounces at me from under furniture and around corners
-plays fetch (yeah i know, that's kinda wierd)
-headbutts me when he wants attention
-chews through food bags and shreds the bag his litter comes in
-opens every cupboard within his reach
-gets sudden bursts of energy and tears up and down the apartment meowing at the top of his lungs (he has a mumbly sort of meow normallY so when he does this he over-enunciates so it comes out "MERRRROOOOOOOOWWWWWWR"-hilarious)
-if i let him in the bedroom at night he'll keep me up all night, chewing my fingers, laying across my stomach and then changing positions 18000 times, meowing at me for attention etc all the while UNDER the blankets with me lol
-he attacks anything on the floor. drop a piece of paper, it's his toy now. plastic bag, toy. newspaper, toy. cardboard box.. oh dear god

get used to it :D

When I had my cat he would not only freak out and run around the place, but would also periodically attempt climbing the mini-blinds that covered the windows. I'm not sure if I've ever seen anything funnier than a cat 2/3 of the way up a mini-blind desperately trying not to let go.

Sounds like he wants more interactive play times and exercise.

I wish my cats were more active like that. My foster cats just prefer to be petted. Can't get them to play for more then 5 minutes at a time before they leave and go lay down somewhere. I guess they've outgrown it. Kittens are so much fun.
