View Full Version : Going veggie, but I'm anaemic. Is this a problem?

When I was abou 13 I decided to go veggie, and I gt quite ill because I wasn't eating properly. I stopped, and ever since then I've been anaemic. Not severely anaemic, but some days I have blackouts and go really dizzy etc.
I was just wondering if this is going to be a problem now that I want to go back to being veggie, and whether there are any particular foods people recommend I eat to get a good iron intake??
Thanks!

Congrats on going veg! Here is some good information on iron, and also a list of iron rich plant foods: http://vrg.org/nutrition/iron.htm

what sort of anemia do you hvae? how do you manage it?

taking ferrus salts (iron supplements) may help. get through anemia first, then go veg. you'll know more and how to adjust. between now and then, do as much research as you can.

I am far from being an expert here, but you want to make sure you eat certain foods on a regular basis: beans and other legumes (soaked and cooked from dry is preferable), dark greens such as collards, kale, and mustard greens, and various sources of vitamin C. One dish I think should be high in iron and should help your body metabolize it is a vegan version of Cuban beans. You take some already cooked black beans, some orange juice, diced tomatoes and garlic and saute them. I even use an iron skillet to do this. Adding these things to your diet should help you get through the anemia, even though, if your doctor prescribes supplements or whatever, take them as well.

As far as being veg goes, I must agree with Zoebird. Get the anemia under control first. This will reduce the number of variables you're dealing with.

Follow whatever instructions your doctor prescribes. The advice above is all good.
You can be veg and manage your anemia just fine - Try to eat as many iron-rich foods as is possible and take suppliments if reccommended. I'm anemic and probably always will be somewhat, but I do take suppliments and make an effort to regularly include beans (especially black-beans, balck-eyed-peas and lentils), tofu, tempeh, greens and some dried fruits in my diet. I know those items are high in iron, as are others - I think missleigh posted a good resource.
Good luck!

If you're dizzy and having blackouts then you have a medical problem and you should see your doctor for the appropriate tests to be certain just what health issues you may be dealing with. If this is an iron deficiency anemia then your symptoms sound pretty serious. I suffer from a chornic iron deficiency anemia due to impaired absborbtion. If I get to the point that I'm dizzy and blacking out then I know my iron levels have dropped perilously low.

You need to see a doctor ... and I would also suggest a nutritionist to help ensure that you're going to be eating a properly balanced diet.

that happened to me before.

Check with your doctor, get blood work done..

And stock up on Iron rich foods, like spinach. And take your multi.. maybe iron supplement might help you too as well.

Yes, you should see a doctor if you haven't already.

please see a doctor, if you haven't already. this could be a sign of something far more serious
