I've been a pescatarian/marine vegetarian/fish eating blahblah for about 2½ years now and about one or two weeks ago I realized how stupid and hypocritical it's been of me to eat fish, really. As many others, I've seen them basically as swimming veggies...it wasn't until I visited fishinghurts.com that I really got it. I think it's unfortunate that animal rights groups focus mostly on cattle and other land-living animals...there should be a PETA TV "meet your fish" video.

Anyway...enough of that. There are loads of fake meats out there, but seemingly no faux fish products (at least not that I can find here in Sweden). What can I do (read: cook) to satisfy my "needs"? I love sushi so much, but I imagine that I could totally get by on vegetarian sushi. But...salmon steak? Cod? Blah. I really want to stop eating fish immediately (which I have) because it seems to me that I've eaten enough fish for a lifetime already. Some general fish-eating deterrant thoughts (when I gave up meat I kept thinking about how it was all muscles and how it would feel if someone chewed on my biceps, lol)?

Sorry about this totally confusing post, no sleep tonight and all that jazz.

Good for you! I was in the same boat for a while when I worked at a seafood restaurant. I gave it up for good when I quit working there. Do your family and friends eat seafood regularly? Seafood is appealing to me, but I am just not around it very often, so that has helped a lot. For starters you may just want to avoid situations if you think you'll be tempted.

In which state is Sweden again? Is it Wisconsin? :D Welcome to the boards!
(And be sure to visit the Scandinavian sub-forum under "Other countries". :))

I've had some mock fish in a chinese vegan restaurant here in Houston. You can also get vegan shrimps and stuff. I think the Chinese are the experts on mock seafood, so you might want to see if you can find a good Chinese grocery store somewhere.

I have no idea if you have these kinds of shops in Sweden...buuut...you could try your luck at an Asian supermarket?
At least over here (in Holland) I could get fake shrimp and the taste came pretty close to that of real shrimp (so real I have trouble eating it since I'm not too keen on fish stuff).

I loooove vegetarian sushi but that's all I've ever had. I've seen mock salmon at the health food store but I'm not sure what it tastes like and it's probably not readily available. I like making this mock tuna salad, it's really good...

There's also some info here, including a link to a site that sells mock fish products online...

Also, watch out for products like "imitation" crab meat. Most people don't seem to realize that it's made with fish.

Ack! I browsed around redwoodfoods.co.uk and they only deliver to the UK. *cries a little* Ah well, I'm going to a Chinese food store tomorrow; if I can't find mock fish I'll probably find lots of other goodies.

And Michael, thanks for the recipe link! Sounds beyond yummy.

Congrats on the transition to a full veggie! :D :pibo: I have found a few fake fish products that I absolutely love. One of them I found in the Hannafords vegetarian section. Its a fake fish fillet and it is so good, I just about cried, lol. It was a seafarers veggie fillet. There were two kinds I tried. Both were incredible. Also, tuno is good if you like tuna, although it kinda tastes like crab meat. It makes a great vegan macaroni salad as well.

First of all, CONGRATS! :pibo: :nana:

I've seen fake fish, but never ate it.

Fish creep me out to no end. Maybe to get your mind off of fish = food you can picture whole fish flopping around, fish eyes, eating and getting scales stuck to your teeth. When I was like 7 I found a scale in a fish fry and I've been totally disgusted by fish since then. They are on a non-food scale higher than meat. I'd rather eat cardboard than fish.

Seriously though, the human mind is an amazing thing, if you can train it to get grossed out by fish you'll NEVER want to eat them again.

Congrats, Meidi! Shame you can't get the Redwoods stuff as their Fishless Fingers are great. Vegetagble sushi is good and the sea weed gives it a kind of seafoody taste (well i suppose seaweed is seafood too I guess!)

Hope you find something to curb the cravings. I was never a big fish lover so I've not tried most of the 'mock' fish products (the fingers aside).

Great!! Well done!!

I read this horrible story once, I think it might have been on this board!

This girl's friend had a job over the summer doing something really gross to the fish that came in from the sea, something like pulling the worms out of their bellies or cutting off fungus like growths. Apparently she never ate fish again!

I used to love seafood, it was almost a religious experience. Here in Melbourne Australia we have almost 50 fully vegetarian restaurants, many asian. I can get the nicest mock fish, prawn, cuttlefish, etc. dishes, most of which can be purchased at the local asian store.

The weirdest meal was when I was at this traditional asian restaurant and had the prawn (shrimp) stirfry. The 'prawns' came out complete with heads, legs and little black eyes! I'm pretty easy going, but that made me a little uneasy, they were staring at me with their little gluten eyes!

Ewww
I hate looking at fish anyway, I think they look weird. I had to go to the sealife centre, because my boyfriend was obsessed with seeing a shark, and I felt quite ill. I think it's their googly eyes and scales...eugh.

ACK! Thanks for telling me, I'll try to think about worms crawling around in the flesh if I ever feel the need to eat fish again.. *shudder*

Another thing that motivates me is that I love, LOVE sharks. I think they're amazing creatures and I have done so ever since I was a little kid. I remember I used to cry when I heard about shark fin soup and how the sharks slowly drown to death because they can't stay afloat without moving forward...

Anyway: so far so good! Eating the bestest lentil stew in the WORLD right now.

Imitating meat is one thing, but imitating meat staring at me is yet another!

Congratulations, Meidi! It took me almost twice as long to stop eating fish (after I had stopped eating meat) as it's taken you. Way to go!!!!

I sometimes eat meat substitutes (not too often- they're expensive)- but I didn't know there were seafood substitutes available. I'll have to try a few.

Perhaps it was cruel of me, but when my daughter was younger, she got the notion that she wanted to eat fish like her Dad did. So, I moved our aquarium into the dining room. I told her when she wanted fish she could pick one out of the tank... :sealed: (well... restaurants do that with lobsters!).

She has never shown any interest in eating fish since... :bobo:

Not eating fish may prolong your life. Mercury poisioning from eating fish, is on the rise.

What makes me gag more than anything is raw fish. I used to have no problem eating it when I was an omni, but now, after being a vegetarian for eight years, I can't stand to even look at it. And that's a problem, because I come from a family of sushi lovers (especially my parents), and we eat at Japanese restaurants a LOT. I have to sit next to somebody suckin' down a plateful of raw fish and try hard not to barf. :spew:

ETA: To be fair, my sister, who used to be a strict vegetarian but went back to eating fish a few years ago, still won't eat raw fish. I don't know why exactly, but one theory I have is that raw fish reminds her too much that it used to be a living, swimming animal...

Ummm.. what part was unclear? Carrot hates looking at fish. So what? What difference does that make?
