Ok so its been a few months now and I stopped meat cold turkey, no pun intended. The thought of it just gross's me out. As some of you may remember I was having a visit with in-laws that lasted for 3 weeks, and everything they make is meat based. Even the stuff that they said wasnt was cooked in fat so I said no thanks. One night they tried to slip something in that had meat and I noticed and refused. So cut to the other day, I was in the modd for egg rolls, well I ask for a veggie one with no meat and not seafood. Here I always thought their regualr egg rolls were meatless, nope they use pork, which upset me alot cause I have eaten a couple since I went no meat, I was told there was no meat before.
So I get home and I am ready for my veggie roll, remember I asked about seafood, I take a bite and there is anchioves in it. EWWWWWWWW
So then today I do a search on Jello cause I was going to make jello shots. And guess what thats made out of?
So my question I guess is this, does anyone here eat Jello or anything with gelatin in it? I refuse to now.
Also are there any other common foods that you may think are meat free but arent that I should worry about.
I am still fairly new to this and for the most part, cravings and all are gone, but why does it seem like everything has meat in it?

Most people here don't eat gelatin. I personally don't. There is a thread in the food forum about surprisingly not vegetarian foods here: http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=10432

Gelatin is in some candies too - gummies, Skittles, Starburst. Also in some yogurts. Other than that you'll probably want to be careful with soups. Many, including some cheese and vegetable soups, have chicken or beef stock. And the creamy filling in some snack cakes has beef fat.

I rarely ate Jello anyhow but then I found out what it was and yuck, I rather not eat anything gelatin unless it is specified plant derived.
Yea I was wondering about the beef fat, I havent seen that before is it listed on the ingredients as beef fat or they they term it in another way so you dont even realize what your eating?

Hostess is an evil company that puts animal fat in a lot of their products.

Gelatain is in marshmellows, and marshmellow cereals and hot chocolate. Some candies, especially "gummies" like gummy bears.

Surprisingly Hostess actually lists it as "beef fat." I'm not sure if there's another term that some companies use instead.

Since I've changed my diet around a lot recently I can't give you any heads up on hidden animal products in food, but the easiest way to avoid them is to read labels thoroughly before you put them in your cart and educate yourself on what all those ingredients actually are. It'll annoy anyone shopping with you, but it's important. Or do as I've been doing: don't eat things that need a label. I'm very much against processed, modern foods and have been trying to eat whole, local foods as much as possible. And the processed food I do eat I make sure it's as whole as possible (preferably organic) and has a short ingredient list. So nothing "low fat", they tend to have a lot of additives to try to get the texture right and plain old taste bad, to me at least. And the more additives, the more likely you're going to find hidden animal derivatives.

I stopped eating jello a while back mainly because I was taking refined sugar out of my diet, but when you think what jello is made from and was probably from a poor factory raised animal, there's an even better reason to not eat jello.

I don’t particularly like PeTA, but they do have a list of animal ingredients. Should be fairly easy to find it on their website. I'd give you the link, but I can't post links because I'm too new.

Good luck.

Animal fat is often listed as 'tallow'
oh and you can get vegetarian/vegan jelly if you want to make jello shots. The brand I use is 'Ahmed' and I get it from asian supermarkets (its originally from Pakistan). I'm in Australia, and it costs me 99cents a pack here. I'm sure it would be available in most countries.

I personally don't eat geletan, I think that most people here are the same. Some veg*ns will not eat OTC medicines with geletin in it, I won't if I can find a good alternative, and will if I can't. If you take vitamins and OTC medications, check the ingreadiant list, there are probaly alternatives to everything, I just havn't found some or they are to expensive.

Very few people here eat gelatin. my husband and I do not. We have been vegetarian for several years now, and just last night we were talking about dessert, and he told me that the only thing he really misses jello!! He did love it, I would make it for him all the time. We've tried some of the vegan ones but they just aren't the same. Oh well! Hopefully one day the artificial stuff will become cheaper than the real stuff and jello will make it vegan again ;-)

I've had vegan jello that was very good! It's a little less solid than Jello brand jello, but very tasty.

Gelatin is nasty all-around, so even if I wasn't veg I don't think I would eat it knowing what I know about it. Mmmmm, boiled cartiledge and hooves... :spew: Obviously if it's in needed medication that's a little different, but I would derive no pleasure from consuming it in unneeded things.

Yeah, I dunno what's up with that. I order chinese so ridiculously often that they already know exactly what I want when I tell them the address.. they always say "Yes, I know you guys don't want ANY meat at all, right? And you want VEGGIE ONLY spring rolls" and they still manage to throw in spring rolls with a stray shrimp (eww.. looks like a little curled-up fetus) here and there. I honestly think they just store them all in a bin together and just grab whatever, haha. They've never messed up an order of veggie/tofu General's "chicken," though :lick:

We made a jello brain last Halloween out of Vegan Sweets Fruit Jel. I don't remember how tasty it was because we put too much non-stick spray on the mold and all you could taste was the slimy "buttery" flavor, lol. It set up nicely though, and I think we even had fruit pieces suspended in it and soymilk mixed in so it would be opaque and "realistic."

I think the only time I'd consume gelatin is if it was in the coatings of medications I needed. If you get really sick, you can't help the cause. Other than that, no Jello for me.
