View Full Version : Opinions please on dog that needs a home

I've been trying to help some people find a home for their husky. It hasn't been too successful. (Partly because they gave me their phone # to give out, but then don't answer numbers they don't recognize. And partly because they don't bring me a picture like I asked for. It's much easier to re-home a dog if potential owners can actually see it.) Anyway, now they're getting ready to take the dog to a shelter.

So other dog lovers, if you were me, would you take the dog and try to re-home it yourself? I'm thinking with a couple trips to the dog park, I could find her a good home. The lead vet tech at my vet's office would also help out with potential owners. She said I could put an ad on their bulletin board and since she knows most everyone that comes in, she could tell me who'd be a good home and who wouldn't.

Or should I just forget the headache (and the risk of getting attached) and let them take her to the shelter. (They're planning on the no-kill shelter but I don't know if they realize the place has a waiting list.)

how stupid.

I don't know. You're better at this then I am. If it were me I'd let them take it to the shelter. Their dog, their responsibility. Why are they getting rid of it?

My family has always taken dogs in and attempted to find a home for them. That's what we did with Many who's been with us for two years now. We really couldn't find anyone to take her and we got attatched to her and her to us. Sometimes it's hard to find people, but if you are worried about this dog and believe that you can care for it better and find it a good home then I say go ahead and take it.

Good Luck

It's too "hyper." It's one year old and it's a husky. Hyper is part of the territory. I guess they didn't do much research before they bought her.

Let them bring the dog to a shelter. It's their responsibility. Tell them to do their f***ing research before they even consider getting another dog. Actually, I'd probably tell them that they shouldn't even consider getting another dog, ever....
:whack: <----what I'd like to do to people who don't consider the nature of the dog they're getting.

Well, I don't know your circumstances - ie - how many dogs do you have at home, are you able to provide the time needed with this dog, etc etc. How good is the shelter they are dumping the dog off at? My heart says take the dog - I hate to see them go to a shelter. My head says - I don't know...

BTW - while taking the dog removes the guilt from their conscience, I think advising someone - "their dog, their responsibility" is a little callous (for the dog) - because in the end, I don't give a sh** about the owner , for me, the main concern is the dog.

I would say take it and re-home it yourself. Otherwise you will probably always wonder what happened to it. It sounds like a nice dog and I'm sure you will find it a nice home. :)

Don't a lot of people want Huskies?

I would take it myself if you lived closer. I've always liked those type of dogs and hyper is good for our lifestyle.

How long is the waiting list for the no kill shelter and how long have they had this dog for? Do you think if they find out the waiting list is too long that they would take it to another shelter?

Not trying to be callous, but I'm concerned that if you make it too easy for people to get rid of their pets that they'll keep doing it. "I don't like this dog, no problem so-and-so will take it, I'll get another one, oops tired of this one too, time to call so-and-so again." Not saying that Wolfie would let herself get used in that manner, but we see this situation time and again with people who learn that they can get rid of dogs with no questions asked at open access shelters when they grow tired of them. In this situation that Wolfie described, it sounded like they want to get rid of the dog but don't want to do anything to help find a home, not even so much as answer the phone. I'm more than willing to help people find good homes for their dogs, and definetely don't want to see them turned into shelters that are already full, but I want the people to do some work. Sorry if it sounds callous, but if I were in that situation I would tell the owners that it's their dog and that if they want my help they're going to have pitch in some help on their end too. How hard is it to get a picture and a description?!

If you do decide to try to keep helping, I'd try to find a husky rescue to take her, they'll be better situated to find a good placement and will probably be able to keep the dog for longer than a typical shelter.

I think you are right. I'd let them take the dog to the shelter and immediately follow up, get to know the shelter team and see if you can adopt out the dog soon after and try to find him a new home and or even keep him.

However, if you don't know where they will dump the dog or if you are afraid he will be euthanized, then take him now. Or perhaps you can tell them that you will try to find him a home if they give you some money to help with his care, or a donation to an animal welfare group.

It's very difficult to not feel responsible for a dog, once you've taken an active role in his future. I personally wouldn't be able to do what you've done and then not know what happened to the dog.

Ha ha. There's no way I could keep her. I'd love to have another young dog for my husky to play with, instead of playing referee all day when he gets to be too much for Rosie, one of my other dogs. (She's his chosen victim. My other two girls know how to put him in his place.) But I've got a houseful. No more permanent residents for the time being.

Thanks for the input. I'm not sure what I'll do yet. I haven't seen the girl for a few days, so they might have taken her already. I do know if the no-kill has a wait list and they don't want to wait that long, I'll take her over letting her go to a kill shelter.

I could have found this dog a home already, I know I could have, with a little cooperation. All they had to do was bring me a pic and answer the phone. I don't understand people sometimes. :wall:
