I just bought some make-up that was said to be Vegan and after I bought it, I checked the ingredients. Under the "May contain" list, the last item was carmine. Would this make-up still be considered vegan? Please comment!
Thanks!

Does it say "manufactured in a plant and may contain" or "may contain traces of"? If it says one of the above comments, then I eat/use the product anyway usually. However, if it just says "may contain carmine", I may not eat/use it. It is up to you.

In the case of makeup, carmine is used to create a certain shade of red. Some companies (Ecco Bella, for example) have some colors that contain carmine, and some that do not. But they choose to use the same ingredient label for all colors, hence the "may contain" part. If you contact the company, they should be able to tell you which colors contain carmine.

All it says is Ingredients: blah, blah, blah. May contain: blah, blah blah. The colors are silver, so I don't know why it would use carmine. When I contacted the company before, they said they didn't use animal ingredients, or test on animals.

They may not realize carmine is an animal.

That's what I mean. The silver most likely does not have carmine in it, since carmine is used for reds. But many of these companies make one list of ingredients for, say, all of their lipsticks or nail polishes, and use the same list for all colors, even though one color lipstick may have carmine and one may not. Hence the "may contain". It's the company being lazy with their labeling.

The "May contain Carmine" is extremely annoying. It's the reason I have a hard time finding vegan makeup when I go to the store! I wish they would just put carmine as an ingredient on the shades that DO have carmine and not put "may contain" on the shades that are carmine-free.
I hate it - but I double check everything I buy, and then I let my brother do so also. We quad-check, if you may. HOWEVER : If the product says " May contain trace amounts" or something like that - just buy it. Lets face it - it is nearly impossible to avoid it. Silk Soymilk is even owned by a dairy producer. If there is something in it, at least it is so small that it couldn't even get on the ingredients list. 99.9 percent of the time, nothing will be in it. They just have to put that stuff or they could be sued.
