idon't know, is it good or bad?

all of my family is omnivorous. my husband is omnivorous. i eat near and with meat eaters all the time. i don't think it's bad.

there are lots of recipes here at VB that are easy and tastey. check around.

welcome to the boards.

It's a personal choice. If you feel really strongly about your choice, and you can't deal with meateaters, sit in the other room. Respect their choices, ask for respect in return.

The first book i bought after deciding to become a vegetarian was "Vegetables Rock!: A complete guide for teenage vegetarians" it was very helpful with learning how to live a vegetarian lifestyle and has great recipes for yummy veggie foods. Consider buying it. Good Luck!

I think it's good, unless you can get to a point where you never have to eat in front of meat eaters. It's good practise to stay tolerant, because intolerance of other people eating meat doesn't help anything.

Well if you're mainly doing it for animals and are disgusted by the sight of meat, it might be kind of hard to sit and look at people eating it. For me, i'm not being a vegetarian for animals. I'm doing it for heathy, so it really wouldn't bother me.

I don't know what to tell you. I guese it's your choice if you want to eat with them or not :)

I agree with Elena. We live in a world of meat eater's, so we have to at least tolerate them, or they will feel the same about veg*nism. My family is omni ('cept me of course, I'm vegan), and they usually only cook meat on the weekends. I personally cannot stand the sight or smell, but we all have to live with/around meat eater's so I just try to tolerate it. Or when we have company (this happened this weekend) and the conversation is on the topic of how *some form of dead animal cooked a certain way* is SOOOOOO good, I simply finish my food, get up and leave. No vegan should have to listen to how breaded pork is delicious. :spew:

Just look him straight in the eye and say calmly "You can yell all you want, but my mind is made up. I'm doing this for the animals, and my conscience is clear." Hopefully, that will stop his yelling.

All of the members of my family are omnivores (apart from moi, I'm a vegan) but I don't find it a problem sitting near to them, unless they start talking (as mentioned in other posts) about how great the meat is... If you find it a problem, maybe you could ask if you could eat in a different room? Or at a different time from the rest of your family.

peace and love amy-jane xx

I agree with everyone here, your best choice would be to sit in another room.

I'm sorry you are taking abuse for your dietary choices. :( Be STRONG and stand up for what you believe in. I know easier said than done, but you have to try to be strong.

I'm sorry people around you are making it so difficult. I remember when I first turned veg and I couldn't believe some of the stuff people said to me.

The best advise that I can give you is to try to stay firm. It's tough at first to not eat something someone is giving you, or to say "No, I don't believe in eating that", if you stay true to it;people will eventually realize that your decision to not eat meat isn't going to change. People eventually get tired of their little jokes and put downs, and become more accomidating to your choices.
:dizzy: Good luck on dealing with everything, and know that you always have a whole bunch of friendly ears here!

I've been on & off & on again lacto-ovo veggie for yrs.
At the moment there are 10 omnis living in this household and we all seem to eat at different times of the day (all day long), so it's not as if we all sit down together for dinner.

This week, I cooked up some mixed dry beans in 2 slow-cookers and added onions, garlic, carrots, stewed tomatoes, & spices. Course only 1 other family member would try it. Everyone is to fussy and either don't like beans or tomatoes or complained when I refused to cut up hot dogs in it...with no room in frig for leftovers cuz it's stocked with omni food (bologna, sausage, hamburger, eggs, mayo,....etc. So I ended up giving some to a neighbor.
Yesterday, an omni cooked up the last of the rice....with hamburger mixed in it...Any thing that looks, smells or has the words Tofu/soy on it will bring whines & complaints.

How would ya get your family to eat more veggie meals? and yes they have seen or heard about every reason that veggies have given for being veggie.

Maybe you should just not mention vegetarianism around them and just be really cool with them eating meat, even if you aren't really. They won't respect you unless you respect them. I am sorry they are saying those things to you, but the most you can do is ignore them and tell them that they are being mean and to stop. Good luck. :)

My advice is don't get in the habit of eating away from your family. With the world the way it is, sometimes meals are the only time we see each other anymore. These people are prolly going to be part of your life until they die or you do. You don't want to spoil those relationships.

I never talk about being vegan to them, they bring it up...in the morning my uncle asks whst I had for breakfast and he says "no, eggs, bacon..........."
ANd every time I try explaining how animals feel, THEY START FIGHTING, and get mad at me for no reason at all, I cant say anything without a fight, or my grampa, a debate..........I cant wait until Friday, I cant wait to leave, far, far away......

You say you explain how you feel? That could be it. Last night I was with friends and my one rather judgmental friend said, "oh I forgot you're VEGAN. Why are you vegan?" and he said it really condescendingly. And I felt really uncomfortable, so I just said it's a personal choice and we all moved on. Sometimes, not explaining can avoid fights.

I know it seems like I am telling you not to stand up for your convictions, but I'm not. When they genuinely ASK you why you are vegan, then by all means talk to them about it! But, when people are being nasty, they WILL take anything you say as an offense. This is just from my experience. Good luck hun! :)

Heh-heh. I know this is dumb, but I had an idea for a response to "why are you vegan" for those annoying people... "because it bothers you so much." Maybe they'd stop bringing it up after that. Or not.
