View Full Version : Vitamin B-12 question [What is the best dosage?]

I started a vegan diet about a week ago..... well more of a lifestyle change than a diet. I bought vitamin B - 12 supplements that are 1000 mcg. It says that they have 16,667% of the daily value of B - 12. They are time release. Do you think that they will cause a Vitamin B - 12 overdose? Does anyone else take vitamin B - 12 that is over 1000 mcg per day?

The handy-dandy "Search" function will produce a host of threads all about everything you'd ever want to know about B12.
(see it? It's the drop-down option on the top of the thread, and it says "SEARCH".)

See how that works for ya.
And if by some chance it doesn't work, here's a few of the over 45 threads my search query produced:

B12 is watersoluble, meaning you can't overdose on it, you'll just pee the extra out :)

I only take my B12 once a week.

If something has to offer that much of a percentage then the quality may be lacking.

That's just how your body metabolizes b12, you need a lot of it cause it only takes in a smaller percentage of it.

I've been taking sublingual B12 for a couple weeks now - thats over 8000% a tablet - and i already think I feel a difference (scary!)

Just out of curiosity........where does B12 come from when it's in supplement form?
I know, technically, it's not a vitamin. It's an enzyme produced by bacteria as they consume flesh, eggs, dairy, etc.

Yes, but you have to ask yourself what are the bacteria eating in order to produce the B12 found in supplements?

specifically to make the b12, cobalt, but maybe you mean what they live off of.

I read on the back of the B-12 bottle that I bought from the Whole Foods store that you should take two twice a day. But then I read on the internet that if you take too much B-12 it isn't good. So I take two capsuls twice a week.
