Hey everyone, just a question about sushi. I've never had it before, but some of my friends love it, and want me to try it. Have any of you had it before? And what do you think about it? I'm not too fond about the whole raw fish deal, but I've been told that "it's not really raw." All I can really remember is my experience, of visiting my Aunt when she had food poisoning from it, and ever since then I've been a little freaked to try it. It probably just traumatized me because of how young I was at the time.

Well, there's lot's of vegetarian sushi...meaning it isn't made with fish or crab or any other animals. My favorite are the vegetable rolls. They're made with cucumbers, avacados, carrots, rice and seaweed. I also really like inari rolls: the outside is a soft shell made of soybean curd, and the inside is wonderfully seasoned rice and sesame seeds. Mmmm...now I want sushi.

Always read the menu to make sure there are no animal ingredients..."imitation crab" is made of fish. GROSS.

Personally, I think it's exceptionally rare to get food poisoning from sushi. I've never gotten it nor known anybody to get it from sushi, and I've been eating it for many years, plus I'm a member of a sushi-loving family. If you aren't wild about the idea of eating raw fish, then you don't have to have it. If you would still like to try sushi, you have another choice: vegetable/vegetarian sushi. Just be careful; some vegetable sushi choices mayl contain roe (fish eggs). When you go to a sushi restaurant, ask your server what they have that contains ONLY vegetables, no fish, mollusks or roe. They might even make up something special for you if you ask. :D

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback. I guess I'll trust my boyfriend, and see if I dig it. You never know, right? And I second the yuckiness to imitation crab. Ever since I found out what it really was, a long time ago, I've always been sort of weirded out by it. (=

.. of course Sushi with seafood is not vegetarian, so if that is the lifestyle you're aiming for, you may want to stick to vegetable sushi.

I would guess that people would say that sushi isn't really raw because the rice is cooked. A plate of sashimi (raw fish) without rice would be raw. Though while Sushi can be vegetarian (i.e. vegetable rolls), Sashimi cannot.

I love vegetarian sushi!!! :lick: one of them tastes a lot like fish too, can't remember which though. I think the rice was wrapped in seaweed or vine leaves or something, and there were mushrooms inside.

Sushi refers to the rice. The raw fish is sashimi. You can get sushi with just veggies. I get a cucumber roll and a Philadelphia roll (cream cheese, avocado). I love it, eat it like every other day. But it's not for everyone, you'd have to try it.

right. the rice of sushi would make it 'not raw' (because that part is cooked) but the fish or other ingredients may be raw. the sushimi is the raw fish, usually served with or without rice. my husband gets his without rice.

i do not eat sushi or sushimi that is not vegan. i get veggie rolls--avocado, pickles, and cucmber mostly when my husband goes for sushimi. i order mine without rice.--so it's more 'sushimi' like. in fact the avocado comes in slices like the sushimi when i order it 'no rice.' anyway, fun stuff.

What veggie sushi would you all recomend? Like I said I havent tried it yet & want to bad but I dont know where to start or what to ask for. So far the suggestions have sounded yummy. Any ideas for a spicy roll & what type of veggies to use instead of Tuna?

I loved sushi before going veg and still love it now, though I do miss the occasional sashimi. I make my own sushi at home and for a very nice spice, use wasabi (a green japanese horseradish) mixed with a little soy sauce. Be careful though, it is spicy! At home I make mine with roasted zucchini, squash, carrots, avacado, cucumber. I would think any veggie assortment would be great.

A place by me serves a mean roll similar to that where the sweet potato is fried, it's killer! I have been very pleased with how accomodating the service has been when you upfront tell them what you don't want to eat in your meal.

I am a former sushi lover, and still eat the occasional veggie roll. YUM!! I would try the veggie rolls first, as they are not too weird and wont interfere with a vegan diet. Be careful of the green paste. I love it but it is POTENT!!
