View Full Version : Putting my cat to sleep....
Bear with me here, it's been a hard day.
So, my mom called this morning and told me that she brought Keo to the vet this morning.
Keo is very old, I adopted her from the humane society when she was a kitten. I was in 6th grade at the time. I'm now 25, so she's been around for a long, long time. Keo has been in my mother's care since I went to college, for practical reasons.
She's got a cancerous growth in her abdomen, a really bad infection in her mouth and a low-level functioning liver. She stopped eating and drinking a few days ago and has been bellowing non stop for about 24 hours.
The doctor said that they could give her fluids and prolong her life for a few weeks, but it wouldn't do anything for the pain and her quality of life is going to rapidly decrease.
My mother left the "ultimate" decision up to me. So, out of love and respect for my cat, we're putting her to sleep tonight.
I'll write more about her tonight when I'm not at work and am free to bawl my eyes out.
I'm feeling a bit like someone is kicking me in the head repeatedly....
OMG I can imagine what a hard decision you had to make. I'm so sorry. hugs.

   I know how hard it is to part with a sick kitty.
Oh, this is such a sad moment. (((((((MEM)))))))))
Give yourself sufficient grieving time. The love we feel for our furry friends is equal to that we feel for humans, so the mourning process takes time.
Keo has been greatly loved and will take the love with her wherever she is going.

MEM-
I am so sorry about your kitty - *HUGS* - I know that you and she will be relieved (although bittersweet) when there is no more pain.
Thanks all.
My mom and my sister and I sat around with her for a while, giving her scritches until she purred.
After Mom left, my sis and I sat with her until she fell asleep and they told us she was gone.
Oh, she will be missed greatly.
Keo was a great snuggle cat and aided my internet addiction by sitting in my lap and refusing to move for hours on end while I was using the computer.
She drooled when she was happy.
In later years, my mom had to wrestle her to sleep. Mom would put her hand on Keo's head, and Keo would wrap her paws around Mom's arm and fall asleep.
In her younger years, she was a great hider of things. We had to be careful about small objects laying around. Her favorite game was to drop small things into a pair of shoes, dive in after them, retrieve them and move on to the next pair of shoes. Occaisonally, she'd forget about a toy, so it was common practice to check our shoes before putting them on. I lost my house keys for three weeks once before finding them in a pair of winter boots...
She was very, very sick and I'm glad that I could give her a bit of dignity, but I'm going to miss her a lot.

I'm so sorry about this, its much harder, at least for me, when I have to decide when they're going to go. It sounds like you did the right thing and I'm sure shes feeling much better now.
I forgot to tell about the guy in the waiting room. We all walked out and had obviously been crying, and carrying an empty carrier and this guy, who had just brought in his cat says "You should get another cat." WTF??? It was all I could do not to hit the guy.
