Ugh, what an increasingly horrible world we live in, tormenting pigs to see what tasers do to people, which is obviously inflict considerable pain. Completely unnecessary, which is pretty typical, huh?

Tell UW-Madison to Stop Cruel Taser Experiments on Pigs!

University of Wisconsin-Madison Professor John Webster plans to conduct a lethal experiment in which live pigs will be electrocuted in order to satisfy claims that the Taser is safe.

Using a $500,000 taxpayer-funded grant provided by the U.S. Department of Justice, Webster will attach electrodes directly to the pigs' skin and implant catheters near their hearts to measure the effects of Taser shocks. He also wants to dose the pigs with cocaine and use a "Super-Taser" device to induce heart arrhythmia.

What makes the experiment even more atrocious is that similar Taser studies have been conducted with pigs, dogs, and bovines on other occasions since 1989. Webster has also stated that he believes Tasers are safe to use on people, negating any claim that this could be an unbiased study.

Tasers are already widely used, and their relative safety can be easily measured using human data. If the weapon manufacturer and law-enforcement agencies were to take responsibility and accept a sensible protocol of follow-up medical assessment for Taser victims, they could gain relevant information. They could supplement this information with the medical histories and autopsy reports of the more than 100 people in North America who have died after being shot with Tasers.

Thanks JP - Is this the same Prof who was stopped last year from trying to do this experiment? I will see if I have my info from last year - if it's not him, there was another "Taser Prof" who was stopped from experimenting last year. It's sick!!

Here is the IDA action alert from March 31, 2005 - (I knew I had seen something on this - note to self: you are NOT going crazy)

IDA ACTION ALERTS

1. Prevent Cruel Taser Tests on Pigs

The U.S. Department of Justice has given Professor John Webster at the University of Wisconsin-Madison a $500,000 taxpayer-funded grant to shock pigs with Taser stun guns to determine why these supposedly non-lethal weapons are sometimes fatal to humans. To test his theory that Taser deaths are the result of drug use and other medical factors, Webster will attach electrodes directly to the pigs' skin and implant catheters near their hearts to measure the voltage of the Taser shocks. He will then administer overdoses of cocaine to the pigs and use a device to induce heart arrhythmia to make the animal test subjects more similar to human criminal suspects fleeing arrest while high on illegal narcotics. To make matters worse, these experiments are almost exactly the same as tests that have already been done on both pigs and dogs. Besides, experts in the field are convinced that studying people who have been injured or killed by Taser shocks can yield much more reliable data.

My sons seemed to think I was walking across hospital parking lots in the middle of the night a way to often, so they bought me a taser. I never thought of using it until you mentioned the professor. There are a few other people in this world putting animals through unnecessary pain. That would be an excellent way to get their attention. Payback can be so sweet.
