Stop using puppies as shark bait, says Bardot

Brigitte Bardot, the film star turned animal rights campaigner, has called on the French government to stop fishermen on the island of Reunion using live puppies and kittens as shark bait.

"It is imperative that the government does something to end this practice," she said in a letter to the minister for French overseas territories, Francois Baroin, a copy of which was given to AFP yesterday.

According to Clicanoo, a newspaper in Reunion, a French island located in the Indian Ocean, a six-month-old puppy was found last month with hooks in its nose and one of its legs.

The French Society for the Protection of Animals told the daily the dog was the victim of cruel fishermen who attract sharks by throwing puppies or kittens into the water, tied to fishing lines, and wait for the predators to swallow the thrashing animals.

"We don't see that every day, but it's not the first time, either," Marie-Annick Chantrel, the vice-president of the Reunion branch of the SPA, told Clicanoo.

"We've already seen cats six or seven months old with hooks in them."

Bardot told Baroin that "unfortunately these are not isolated incidents, and the people of Reunion are the first to be horrified by this despicable barbarity which mars the image of their island."

The campaigner, who runs an animal defence association, said she had written to authorities on the island to have them put a stop to the crime.

my dad fishes, hes a die hard fisherman, if you call them that, although he woudlnt do that ever, ... most get that hunter mentality, do whatever it takes.

Who is "we"? And why do you loathe the French? Because they didn't support the war in Iraq? (A lot of countries didn't, like Germany for instance. Do you loathe them too?) Or is it because of the foie-gras, of which they are the world's top producers?

It's a forum just designed for people to express their loathing and disgust of that pathetic snail-eating and frogs-legs eating nation. Am I the only one that thinks that picture is a little suspect???

The holes where the hook comes out of the dogs lip are VERY clean. I can not believe it would be THAT clean if the picture were real.

Now take a large hook, tie a piece or rope to it, and put it into your lip. Now have somone yank on it. The hook came out didnt it(this is a joke people). But seriously think about it. Don't you think they would place the hook someplace else?

It isnt that I dont believe the story, but i dont believe that picture.

SHOCK new pictures of a pup used as shark bait were revealed yesterday as the man behind the atrocity walked free from court.
The little labrador had a wired hook driven through a paw so it could be dragged through the sea to attract sharks.

It is a different pup to the one pictured in The Sun last week with similar hooks in its snout and leg.

Our exposé of the horrors inflicted on strays on French-controlled Reunion Island, near Mauritius, led to the court appearance of Jean-Claude Clain, 51.

The dad of three was convicted of cruelty. But more outrage erupted yesterday after he escaped with a puny three-month SUSPENDED jail sentence.

Paul Littlefair of the RSPCA said: “We would have hoped for a far stronger deterrent. This is very disappointing.”

More than 33,000 Britons have signed an RSPCA petition demanding an end to the savagery.

The pup in our pictures is recovering and has been adopted by a family.
