One day while mowing the lawn in my fenced in backyard, right next to my garden, I saw something go dashing out as I mowed over some tall grass. It was a eensy-teensy baby rabbit. I looked where it was -- there were three more in a shallow hole, covered with grass to hide them. At twighlight i saw the mother come check up on them.
Eventually they got big enough to leave the hole. I had to chase them out of the fenced in area because they were cutting my soybean plants off at the base, and preventing the soybeans from maturing. Eventually there was only 1 baby left that tried to get back into the fenced in yard, and eat my soybean leaves and stems. It was so cute. It wasn't really afraid of me -- i think because I had visited its nest when it was a baby, without harming it. I chased it around with a water gun until it ran out of the yard and then I closed the fence behind it. I did this about 20 times, to the delight of a screaming child, who seemed to be aware that the rabbit was faster and smarter than me, and who seemed to think that me chasing around a "bun" was the most hysterically funny sight on earth. But eventually I didn't see that last rabbit anymore. It didn't wait, any more, hiding, near the fence gate, for me to open the gate, so it could dash in before I knew what was happening, forcing me to find my water gun and chase it out again (took about 1 1/2 hours each time). I think one of the 100's of dogs or cats that lived in my neigborhood must have killed all 4 of the rabbits.
I prefer to call them my my rabbit-friends rather than my rabbit pets, even tho the babies let me pet them (I checked up whether it was safe for them for me to pet them, before doing so -- any human smell i got on them does not, acc to the info i found, cause the mother to reject them).
Perhaps I should have killed neigborhood the dogs and cats to prevent them from killing the rabbits, as rabbits are rarely seen in the area, but dogs and cats overpopulate the area, due to the fact that people are always helping these carnivorous animals to survive, but rarely helping herbivorous rabbits to survive.
That is, (1) dogs and cats exist in much greater numbers than the amount that the ecosystem would support naturally, because humans bring them into the area, and help them to be able to live and breed once they are in the area; and (2) rabbits exist in much smaller numbers than the area could support because humans do nothing to help them, and in fact make their lives difficult by brining in carnivorous animals in much larger numbers than would exist natually.
Normally, there is only like 1 carnviorous animal in an ecosystem, for 1000's of herbivorous animals. By simply importing dogs into an area, people are putting the ecology way out of balance. They are killing off my free-living rabbit friends and companions, in the process of having human-dependant dog and cat companions.
It doesn't matter if people buy dogs and cats from breeders or pick them up because someone abandoned them at a shelter, they still throw the ecology way out of balance, and strike fear and terror into the hearts of rabbits.
Imagine walking thru the urban jungle, and 1 out of every 1000 persons is a mugger-murderer. That is the life of a rabbit before humans bring in dogs and cats. Now imagine walking thru the urban jungle, but instead of 1 mugger for 1000's of law-abiding citizens, there table are turned the other way, there are 1000 mugger-murders for every law-abiding citizen. The situation has switched from being like any law-abiding citizen in a modern-day big city, to like being a Jew in Nazi Germany. That is the situation rabbits face today in areas where people own dogs. It is Nazi Germany for rabbits. It is a miracle that some rabbits still survive.
I've got 3 lovely turtles who r obssessed about food ^^ I've had them for 4 years now.
I'd love to have the following as well:
a dog
a chinchilla
a guinea pig
a hamster
a pony
a duck
a pig
a sheep
etc.
Don't think I'll have time for them tho :-P
I have a rottweiler named Bruno who turns 6 years old tomorrow. It's kind of depressing because I don't want him to get any older. Rottweilers don't live that long. :( I bought him from a breeder when he was a puppy, and unfortunately, he's had hip dysplasia since he was a year old. It's real mild, and he's still a puppy at heart, but it still limits him some. Needless to say, now that I've learned about the negatives of breeding, I will from now on only adopt any animal companions I bring into my home.
I also have a black and white kitty named Crystal. She will turn 11 this August, but she'll never admit that she's that old. She acts and looks like she's very young yet.
I love them both so much it hurts sometimes.

Oooh I love reading about people's animals, and especially seeing pics!
I have 9 rats - 5 girls and 4 boys. The girls were rescues, and the boys were rescued from pet stores:
Jonah and Micah - my two baby rat boy brothers (blazed, black/white)
Davey and Tobey - my two big squishy brothers (gray/brown berkshire)
Ruthie, Esther, Tali, Tori, and Channah - my look-alike girls - all sisters (gray/brown berkshire)
I have lots of rat pics here (http://www.richnetworks.net/lisa/rats) and here (http://groups.msn.com/TheBruxingRat/lisasrats.msnw).
I also have a cat named Matty; you can see her here (http://www.richnetworks.net/lisa/matty_bed.jpg) (disregard the sleeping girl)
Then there's my 5 betta fish - Red, Jeronimo, Javabean, Smoke in the Water (aka Smokey), and Titus. They are the smartest fishies!
At work I have a 2 gal. aquarium full of ramshorn snails - two adults and lots of babies! We call them "Lisa's Fu**ing Ramshorn Snails" because they are the horniest things - they lay a new egg sac every other day LOL (No, I have no idea what I will do with the babies when they get bigger).
And my latest baby is Turkey, a green budgie that my parents gave me as a birthday present  I love this bird, and am trying to tame him. He already knows UP and KISS and of course he gets lots of those!

I have 2 kitty-cats .. one is a chubby black fluff-ball named Steak.. I know.. I know .. not a vegan friendly name .. but she's the best cat ever. She was 5 years old on May 13th.. and I will probably die along with this cat that's how much I love her. I should've named her shadow since she follows me around so much.. but Steak was one of my friend's jokes that somehow stuck with her. The other is a 3 year old slender orange tabby named Bubba .. who is a very loving boy that I adopted from Petsmart as a kitten. He will not drink out of the $40 cat fountain I bought for them though.. of course he has to drink only from the water glass on my nightstand.
I also have a sun conure (small parrot) that is only about 4 months old.. my boyfriend got him for me as a birthday present. His name is Screech and he's turned out to be our home alarm system since he screams and screams when you first come into the house.. very smart though.. likes to take showers with me and loves to grab food out off of my plate.
I used to have a dog named Duke.. he was the best dog ever.. a little Pembroke Welsh Corgi but I had to give him to a friend when I moved into my condo. When I have a big house someday I'm going to go adopt all the corgis I can!!
"Dogs come when called, Cats take a message and get back to you later"
Just one rat, personally, and my family has a Jack Russell. It's so sad.. When i get older I want to surround myself with animals - rescues - dogs, cats, everything.

I have been surrounded by animals my whole life, but now that I am in an apartment, I am only allowed to have my cat,
Johhny Raisinhell, who you see here. He is the love of my life! I will soon be adopting a Pionus Parrot named Rosie and am looking for a new apartment that will allow her, so I don't have to hide her!

I've got a tortoiseshell kittycat named Lucky Abigail (who is pictured at your left :)) and nine fish -- Sam, Blue, Canary, Stuart, Rhea, J.R., Curly, Larry, and Moe.
My favorite fish -- who was a carnival goldfish before he came into my home -- Adam Herbert, passed away recently after a long, happy life of chasing around his aquarium-mates. (Adam holds even deeper meaning to me because he was actually the catalyst for my vegetarianism!)
I have 2 short-haired black cats. Spaghetti, (Sketti for short) walked in the door one day when I was leaving for work. He's 3. Maceo, was adopted from the SPCA, and he is 2. They are the coolest cats ever! I can't imagine living without them and I am getting a little teary just thinking that will happen someday. Sad...
And I have an Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) named Perry. He just turned 1 on May 1st and he is the most dependent dog I have ever seen! He's my baby and sleeps almost on top of me every night!

I've since accquired two more rescue ratties; we brought them, their mom, and their 14 brothers and sisters home from a horrific animal hoarding situation when they were only a day old.

At the moment I have 2 fat happy rats called Bob & Buzz....no pics though unfortunately. I also 'technically' have a cat although she's moved cat heaven on earth. When I went travelling overseas she went to live with my best friend's parents....when I returned to Aus she'd put on 5 kilos & was so pampered & happy where she was that I didn't have the heart to "reclaim" her. Her new family are retired so she has lap space 24 hours a day pretty much & seeing their 3 kids have left home Calypso is their new baby. I visit her from time to time & she still loves to jump onto my lap for a cuddle. Awww....missing her now. But my boys keep me happy. Sorry for the ramble, love my little furry family lol.

I have a quaker named lucie that thinks she's a person. she saw some quakers at the pet store when her "dad" took her to get her wings and nails trimmed and she was so afraid of them that she had to leave the room to calm down. We also recently adopted a baby mockingbird that we're handfeeding. Her name is Scout and I've no clue what to do with her after she's weaned since she's very imprinted on people now

I have 8 animals
1 dog, named "Boo-Boo", i got her at the humane society when she was just a wee pup. Border Collie/Blck Lab mix. Now she is three and the light of my life!!! MY BABY!!!!
1 fish named "Isis", also three years old, shes a beta.
1 Turtle, named "Koke Kamahele" (hawiian for "fast traveler"), almost two years old.
5 mice, "Jordan" mother of my mice babies. I saved jordan last year on my turtles birthday, and three days later...She had 9 babies!! I didn't even know she was pregnant! With "jordan" i saved "Clamydia". unfortunatly, alot of my babies have passed. But i still have the two original mammas, and one baby girl "Zadie", and two baby boys, "Boo-Boo", and "Ekim"
I gave my brother one of my mice and he named it Boo-Boo, after the dog, so thats why we have two Boo-Boos. My mom hated the mice and turtle when i just randomly brought them home without permisson. But once she saw that they had little feelings and expressions, she learned to LOVE them. Jeez, I'm sorry i write so long.

My wonderful cats:
Pablo Ferdinand(my first baby!) who's 5. Short grey fur with amazing green eyes.
Slim(a hand-me-down sweetie from my dad) who's a black/orange/white calico.
Althea Ahnyz(my girlfriend's cat) who's a beautiful grey/black tiger cat.
Slim had managed to get loose outside before I had a chance to spay her, so she recently became a proud mommy to 4 kittens. If I can't find homes for them, they're staying with us and they are already getting big with tons of personality. So those kitties are:
Ezra: I was going to keep him anyway. Orange and white tiger stripes.
Little John: All white. He's the lazy one. :)
Stella: Looks like her mom, black with orange and white.
Tanyard: White with tan ears and tan striped tail. He got his name because I misheard my girfriend calling him "tan-eared". I was like, Tanyard? That's a weird name hon. And she laughed.:D
Althea acts as a second mom and is always laying with the kitties like they're nursing. She cleans them and plays with them. So cute!
