What's your favorite apple? Mine's Fuji.

I only buy organic, because i hate the wax on non-organic apples. Why the hell are grocers doing this???

My least favourite Apple is Granny Smith. Too tart.

Ah, there's so many that I love! Braeburns, Gala, Fuji... yum yum!

Least favorite is Macintosh all the way. yucky! I'm not a fan of red delicious either.. or Granny Smith if eating them straight - otherwise they're good in pastries & pies.

Yes braeburns and galas are yummy too. I also like pink ladies. i'm ok with mcintosh.

I'm not too fond of Red delicious either. Just finished a bag of them which i bought for 'diversity'.

i'm not definitive about golden delicios. sometimes i like them, sometimes not.

I really like Fujis a lot :) Mmmmm! A little tarty and sweet!

Regarding apples and wax... apples naturally produce their own wax to keep the fruits from drying out. When apples are picked and washed, the washing removes the natural wax. So to counter that, a very small amount of food-grade vegetable wax is applied. This keeps the produce from losing moisture through natural transpiration--otherwise, they'd be wilting and getting soft during shipping. (This is true for many perishable fruits and veggies such as zucchini, cucumbers, eggplants, oranges, etc.)

The bad news for veg*ans is that for some produce, the wax that is applied is derived from a bug (the lac bug, which produces shellac) or from beeswax. If this is a concern for you, you might want to research your local produce.

Organic or not, you'll want to wash your produce before consuming it anyway! Organics aren't exempt from carrying bacteria such as salmonella. You never know if the last person who touched that produce washed his or her hands after using the bathroom, picking his/her nose, or handling other contaminated foods.

Everybody likes Fuji :)

Thanks for the info, Molly. I don't mind eating bugs&worms, guess I eat a lot of them anyway in my fruit and lettuce which I rarely inspect closely.

Washing fruit would take away my sole source of B12... ;)

Of the regular, grocery-store apples, I like Honeycrisp and Pink Lady Best. The best apples I've ever eaten though, are Macouns and Ashmead's Kernals, neither of which are easy to find around here.

Red Delicious is the only kind of apple I will eat - I am eating one right now in fact. My least favorite would be Granny Smith - too tart - although I can tolerate them if I cook them with something.

I like granny smiths. Very sweet, though my criticism of granny smiths apples is that they're not soft enough. The standard golden delicious apple is good enough in terms of bite, but it loses flavour. I'm no fan of red apples, or at least the bright red apples. I do like the ones which are reddish-greenish though. (This is where i lose sight of all my apple knowledge)

But to me, I like green apples of any variety. Apples are my favourite fruit.

Red Delicious apples were bred for certain characteristics, most notably their durability during shipping, and uniform color and size. They made apples available to many people in the southern states that normally couldn't get good apples. They are single-handedly responsible for Washington States now-burgeoning apple industry.

They were not bred for flavor, however. Compared to almost every other apple, they are mealy and boring....

I love Fuji apples. Granny Smiths are fine for cooking & baking, but I don't like to eat them straight. Too tart for me...
