This is not a teenage rant, it's not even a rant, but I was wondering if it was legal to divorce a parent. My dad has major anger issues, he's verbally and emotionally abusive, and he's almost killed me three times. I get sick over this and he really scares me. If anyone has any info, that'd be great.

Thanks ahead of time. :D

I know it's been done before. And, if your father has a violence issue (almost killed you three times??!!) his custody could be taken away by the state.

You could also try emancipation. I don't know much about it, really, but it does happen.

I know that you can transfer guardianship (I had it done), and by the time I was 16, I was considered an independant. I've been living on my own since 15. It can be a bit tough, but if the situation warrants it, GET OUT!

Are you living with him? If you are, and you're considering a break from the family (be ready for a backlash from other relatives?) It doesn't necessarily have to be legalized divorce, but you can leave. If you're not living with him and just don't want that attachment, I think thats an entirely different story, and with support, you could get a restraining order? It all depends on your particulars. Feel free to send me a msg if you want to talk about this further. It is really hard dealing with situations of trauma in family, especially as a teenager where you're somewhat in limbo.

If he's tried to kill you multiple times, LEAVE!

Get out, find help. But leave now. Better to be in a foster home then dead.

You haven't told us your age, which is probably a factor on when you can leave your father's house. Emancipation may also be another possibility. Emancipation seems to be part of state law, not federal law and thus will vary from state-to-state.

If you're living with both of your parents, then I don't know what you could do to just not have contact with your dad unless you moved out of the house. At 14, however, I don't even think you can be emancipated. (I think you have to be 16, since at 14 you can't even really get a job) If your parents are divorced, you could certainly have visitation with him stopped. You're old enough to petition for him to lose any custody if you're in a joint custody sort of situation. If he's abusive, you should talk to a school counselor and get him called on it by CPS or something. Is there a friend or relative you could live with if needs be?

Well, he's diabetic and all the times we almost died was in the car when he went into a reaction. I'm 14. Um, my mom is a good parent. I trust her. She's going to divroce him.

If you are 14 and your parents are getting a divorce, your opinion will most likely hold a lot of weight in the custody agreement.
