I never heard this and thought i would share it. Sorry if this old news to you guys.

Toppling the statue of Saddam Hussein
From SourceWatch
Toppling the statue of Saddam Hussein was a staged event, by U.S. soldiers, for the media. A Reuters long-shot of Firdos Square where the statue was located (see below) shows that the Square was nearly empty when Saddam was torn down. The Square was sealed off by the U.S. military. The 200 people milling about were U.S. Marines, international press and Iraqis. However, the media portrayed it as an event of the Iraqi people.

This was touched on in the documentary The Control Room. I highly recommend it. Thanks for the link.

It was pretty obvious that it was a staged event. I mean, even at the time it was obvious. I don't think many people fell for it.

Doesn't change much though. It was still quite a momentous occasion (whatever side of the fence one is - for his enemies as well as his supporters. It must have freaked out SH himself when he heard about it).

Control Room, boring, boring, boring.
Doesn't change much though. It was still quite a momentous occasiontrue, when berlin fell it was the soviets raising the hammer and sickle over the reichstag, not berliners. in both situations it was still pretty dangerous even if civilians wanted to do that.

I bet most people fell for it. Staging an event to create a false image of the situation in Iraq isn't so momentous, in my opinion.

Control Room, boring, boring, boring.

haha, thanks Roger Ebert.
